I believe that this will be the best game in Region 1 this week.

I think that the game will come down to Snyder's defense against Vernon's offense and I give the edge to the defense from Snyder and think Snyder pulls this one out 21-14 in a real nail biter.

If they learn how to pass and receivers run some routs out there something they did not do against Monahans would be hard for
Lance Day to get his troops past this round with out a passing game. Well see what happens.

Should be a good matchup. Vernon lost two games in OT. We lost to Decatur but threw a game winning TD with 1 min left to go but had a penalty called and then couldn't convert. They also missed a Field Goal against Burk just before the end of regulation. They had a questionable call in OT against Mineral Wells so those 3 games all were within reach of winning. They simply were outplayed against Midland Christian and Graham beat us 14-7.

The key to beating Vernon is shutting down the inside running game. That is hard to do but both MC and Graham did it. Hirschi also did it but gave up some big plays to get beat. Vernon has done a much better job in the passing game and I think the coaches steal plays from the competition each week (that is a good thing). It wouldn't surrise me one bit to see Vernon run that play that Sweetwater scored on us with next week. Vernon has a salty team that reminds me a lot of when my son was a senior -- They went to the semi's that year (2003). It seems that a lot of the younger ones on this board are not familiar with Vernon. Last year we were beat in the Big School bracket by Gainseville in the first round. We missed the playoffs the year before that and went to the semi's the year prior to that.

Vernon has a quick defense that has played very well the past 3 or 4 games.

Vernon - Snyder should be a good matchup.

I have no idea who said that Vernon barley made the playoffs. We are in a 5 team district and we went 2-2. In the last week of the regular season Every team was on the buble including Graham. Burkburnett had they won against Graham would have been the district champs but they lost and didn't even make the playoffs. In the end it was:

1) Graham 3-1
2) Vernon 2-2
3) Hirschi 2-2

Vernon had a head to head win over Hirschi but Hirschi went Big school so Vernon took the lower seed in the small school.

If Vernon barley got into the playoffs so did Graham and Hirschi. It was a tight dictrict.

Someone mentioned several times that our district was weak. With both Graham and Vernon winning Area round games I think they will admit that they were wrong.

And don't forget Hirschi took Canyon to the ropes in their bi-district game. I agree that this district was a very tough district. Burk didn't make the playoffs and went 7-3.... two losses in district and one to Decatur.

I sound like a broken record, but.... Vernon has to utilize their WMD's to win.(weapons of mass destruction) Whiteside at fullback and Miller at QB. Everybody knows Whiteside is a load at 225lbs with some wheels. Miller goes about 190lbs at QB and is a good tough runner as well.
These two guys give Vernon a good 1-2 punch.... but Vernon must sustain their running game to be effective. Although Miller has a strong arm it isn't always accurate. He isn't a throwing QB, and it's not his strength. Snyder will need to try and force Vernon into passing situations. Put pressure on Vernon and their QB to throw the ball. But if Whiteside gets about 20 to 25 carries and rumbles for 5 to 6 yard average.... then Vernon can and will win the game.
If Snyder has any receivers that have some height they can go up and get passes from Vernon. Vernon's cornerbacks are quick.... but small. Don't get me wrong they are tough and play well, but when you have a guy that is 6'1" or bigger going against a 5' 9"guy you have a good chance of going over the top on these guys.

I haven't seen Vernon play, but I've watched Snyder 2 times this year. Snyder runs pretty much the same offense as Sweetwater, they just don't have those big name guys like Sweetwater did, but apparently, it didn't matter who was in the backfield to Vernon. It saddens me that I'll more than likely be missing this game since I'll be in Abilene. The one thing I've noticed about Snyder is they tend to let teams hang around longer than they should. They were in a semi tight game w/ an even par at best Montarey team. They were only up on Brownfield by 1 at the half, then broke it open. I was talking w/ Dahop at that game and he said if they came out like that against Monahans they'd be down by 14 with 6 left in the 1st quarter. Well, looks like they didn't, and we'll see what happens here on Saturday. I'll take Vernon by a TD.

I do wonder who chose to let Vernon have the wind after they won the toss and took the ball. Do you know if that was the call Jackson wanted or was there a screw-up there?

Some Snyder posters do not seem to be giving Vernon enough credit. Vernon beat a very good sweetwater team convincingly. That in itself gets my full attention. The fact that they are in the 3rd round has my attention. The fact that Vernon has always had a good program gets my attention. I can only hope that it is getting the full attention of the Snyder players and coaches (I'm sure it does).

This should be a hard fought game. Vernon sounds like a very balanced team, kind of like Monahans was. Our secondary has been suspect at times this year, but overall the defense is pretty solid. We did have 3 interceptions against Monahans, 2 of which occured by putting pressure on the quarterback.

Snyder has alot of weapons on the ground. If Clay can get loose, he'll be hard to catch. Knipe and Arrendale run hard and hit the wholes quick, and Carrizales has been a nice surprise. I was a little concerned with the Snyder offensive line against Monahans. Each time Day dropped back to pass, he had a defender in his face and had to avoid a sack. If he is given time, he can be on. Snyder will keep you on your toes with the pass.

Looking forward to this game already, and it's only Monday.

Let's not go overboard. Adames is one heck of a player. I think he had something like 20 tackles against the Tigers last year. I hope that the Snyder defense forces Vernon to pass. Snyder will win if this happens.

no way can you blame the butt kicking sweetwater took on coaching alone, once again your ignorance has shown and is very embarassing to sweetwater fans. maybe if it would have been a close game with sweetwater losing to vernon 6-3 and the offensive coordinator playing musical quarterbacks all game and making bad play selections, then you migh be able to blame the loss on coaching, but to say this is coach jacksons fault is ridiculous. maybe coach jackson should have done a little better preparing the team for the game, but there is no doubt that the vernon outplayed sweetwater

I was reading the monday edition of Sweetwaters online newspaper and Jackson said " if you are going to blame anyone, blame me. The team wasn't prepared for Saturdays game versus Vernon," somewhere along the lines of that but he is putting the blame on himself.

Seriously, is there still a team left who doesn't believe they can win it all? I have to believe this is false. So if these teams believe in themselves, anything is possible.

Ask Vernon. They were the only ones who KNEW for a fact that they could beat Sweetwater.

And Snyder. They are the only ones who KNEW for a fact that they could beat Monahans.

So these two underdogs who weren't even supposed to be in round three just keep provin everybody wrong.

Who ever the winner is, will they be overlooked next week?

apparently Snyder is considered as an unworthy opponant.
This game will be close!!
The winner by less than 10 either way.

Snyder is a very worthy opponent. It will be a very good game. Both teams are good or they wouldn't be in this game. Snyder has really put together a great season. They just beat a team that they lost to early in the season. They have been an improving team and Vernon will have to play a very good game to win. Both teams have athletes. Whiteside is a major contributor for the Lions. But so are the other guys. Whiteside can not and will not win the game by himself. The Vernon defense will have to show up like they have the past 3 or 4 games.

Snyder has a great defense and it is going to be tough. Field position may be a major player in this game. I think it will be a low scoring affair.

One reason that Vernon may have went with the pooch kicks is because Green and Banyard are so dangerous as return men. May be better to pooch a kick to the 35 than have one of those guys run one all the way back on you. Simply strategy on the Vernon Coaches part. It payed off in the turnovers because the Lions offense was rolling.

Vernon may kick it deep everytime this game? I don't know. I do know that Vernon is NOT overlooking Snyder. They know the Tiger's history and I'm sure the Lions are preparing for a fight.

This will be a very good game. (I hope)

Yea, even if your lineman pull a miracle and catch the ball, then the defense will still shut Snyder down.

Sweetwater had two of the most explosive runners in the state and couldn't break one, if the defense shows up like that again it will be tough for Snyder. That style of offense plays right into Vernon's strength on Defense. Should be a good game but Vernon Wins.

I like the Lions in this one. Here's why.

#1 their record. 7-5. Tell me that in all honesty a bunch of 16,17,and 18yr olds won't look at that record and say, "these guys must not be very good." This is a trap for Snyder, a trap that caught Sweetwater in bad way.

#2 their schedule. There aren't any patsies on that schedule. The Lions have been put through the wringer and are battle tested.

#3 they aren't likely to beat themselves. The defense is solid and the offense is pretty conservative.

#4 Aston Whiteside. People have been loading up to stop him all year and no one has been able to shut this kid down. He's been slowed but not stopped. The Lions have also been able to find a few more weapons to use while Whiteside is getting all the attention.

Snyder's Record (9-3). Started the season (0-3). They too have been put through the ringer and are battle tested. The games they lost were all close and could have easily gone the other way.
And their schedule? Snyder hasn't exactly had success playing powder puff teams.
(Snyder's losses) Monahans, Marlin, and Hereford were all very good teams. Wins against teams like Greenwood and Canyon who's records speak for themselves.
Since then they've established a 9 game winning streak. After the Vernon/Sweetwater game, don't expect anyone to take the lions lightly. So don't expect this"trap" to be a factor. Snyder will be ready to play. And they know that their opponant is for real. Hopefully the Lions will take the tigers as lightly as the majority of these posters. If so, sorry bout your luck, your season will be over. But I know better than that, and I expect a heck of a game.

Go Tigers!!!!

We respect them a great deal. As far as the Schedule you have got to be kidding me. Vernons schedule is not tougher than Snyders. Monahans twice, Hereford, Marlin, Palo Duro, Canyon. Every team in our district is still alive. Oh yeah the two teams playing in Division one regional final, we beat them both. I also dont think we need to have a team beat themselves to win. We know whiteside is good, and we respect him as well as his teamates. I think these reasons are kind of silly.

Good post Duke. I agree with you. Snyder is good enough to beat a team without that team making mistakes. Vernon will have to play their best football to win the game. We also may have to have some breaks go our way. Every game has those calls or no calls, fumbles etc. Vernon used them against Sweetwater. I hope that it is a close game and not a blowout.

Of course I'm rooting for a Lion win but should we lose this game I will support the Tigers. Very good program.

Both teams have very good defenses and I think the offense (both sides) will have a hard time.

Looks like I will get to make the game after all. The snow is melting!!!!

Z, You seem to know your football. In this short time I have grown to respect your opinions. Although I hope this is your last game this year, I wish you and Vernon the very best with the holidays and next season. Just not this one. And if things don't go our way this week, I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season. However, I'll Be rootin for Greenwood if they advance and we don't. Its a district thing, you understand. But if theres a Vernon/Graham rematch, I'm with ya all the way.

But for now I will not wish you luck against Snyder. I simply wouldn't mean it. I do however respect your opinions and appreciate your professionalism. Vernon should be proud to call you a fan.

Thanks for the props who! I have followed Snyder the past several years (much like I have also followed Sweetwater). I saw them play Gilmer and Iowa Park two years ago. I liked the play of several former players (Dee Walker & Lico Castillo --I believe that is his name) Anyway, Both were great players and very humble. Snyder has a great coaching staff and a very good football program. Very much like Wylie and Sweetwater. With Monahans, Canyon, Perryton, Greenwood, Iowa Park and Graham there have been some very good football teams come out of the Western half of the state. I really root for our region I teams although I love to hate Graham because they beat us so often. I still root for them in the playoffs.

There has been some good discussion on this week's game and that is what this message board is all about!

You will have to look for me at the game on saturday...I'll have some signs up in the stands. You can't miss them. I may even paint me up a big "Z".

I too was very suprised with that score. Hopefully we'll see 2 good games tomorrow and maybe, Lord willing, we'll have a Graham/Vernon rematch. At the same time, that would suck as I won't be able to make it all the way to Wichita Falls, which is where they would play, b/c it's a halfway place, since I have finals. But I talked to football4life earlier and 3 out of 4 possible outcomes we'll be watching a game together next week. I would think that Canyon would take Region I, but that might be too far for us to go since we have finals next week. Either way, good luck to both teams, especially Graham. I can see why you would say that about lady luck. The way vernon plays you never know what team is going to show up, might be the team that played sweetwater last week, or the team that made it into the playoffs with a 5-5 record. CLASS 3A DIVISION II REGIONAL SEMIFINAL Snyder vs. Vernon

7 p.m., Lowrey Field

• Radio: KSNY 101.5 FM (Snyder)

• Records: Snyder 9-3, Vernon 7-5

• How they got here: Snyder won District 3-3A, beat Brownfield 42-12 in the bi-district round, beat Monahans 21-7 in the area round; Vernon finished as the second seed in District 6-3A, beat Perryton 23-7 in bi-district, beat Sweetwater 47-12 in the second round.

• Keep an eye on: Snyder, RB Will Clay (has rushed for 1,026 yards and nine TDs this season); Vernon, FB Aston Whiteside (has rushed for 1,401 yards and 19 TDs this season)

• Keys to the game: Snyder has loads of momentum, having won nine in a row and two playoff games by a combined score of 63-19. Vernon has been just as impressive in the postseason, and the Lions have a strong running game led by Whiteside and Chase Graf. Snyder's defense has been stout, though, and it allows fewer than 100 rushing yards per game. If the Tigers can muster another solid defensive effort, they should be able to generate enough offense to win. Chase Arrendale and quarterback Lance Day each have at least 576 rushing yards for Snyder, and three different Tigers have at least 100 receiving yards.

• Our pick: Snyder

Are my reasons still silly? Reason 1 maybe, after the whoopin' that the Lions handed the Mustangs and the fact that Snyder and Sweetwater are constantly peekin in to see what each other is doing. The rest of my reasons look pretty not silly. The Lions schedule prepared them to win the game late. The Lions offensive conservatism and solid defense were huge in not letting the Tigers pull away early of give them easy scoring chances. And once again a defense loaded up to stop Aston Whiteside and were unable to get it done.

It's incredible what Vernon is doing after a lackluster first half of the season. People from Midland Christian are in shock that Vernon is doing so well. MC beat them 28-6 in the third or fourth game of the season.

Maybe they are like the '97 or '98 Monahans team that won Region 1 with a 9-5 record and beat #1 ranked and undefeated Breckenridge in the Regional Semi Finals. Monahans just started to put it all together in the 8th game of the season and just got better each week.

I told my friend in Perryton that they should not have any trouble with Vernon in round 1 of the playoffs. Now look where the Vernon Lions are.

Who-dun-it!!?

Of corse I am RM!!
But I was very impressed with what I saw tonight. Vernon is awesome!
They have a lot to be proud of. Greenwood is gonna have to have the best performance of the year to beat them. But I know your boys can do it!! It ain't gonna be easy though.

GO RANGERS!!!!!

Congrats to Vernon! They played a hell of a game. Both teams played great. It was a fun game to watch, and turned out to be everything I expected it to be (except the part where Snyder lost). Vernon demonstrated class on the field, and my hats off to them. I have a new found respect for their program. It was a SMASH mouth game.

To the Tigers - Congrats on a great season. You layed it all out on the field and should have no regrets. Great job Tigers.

Good luck Vernon - Greenwood needs to ready themselves for a great run team with excellent execution. Their offense played tough with some very solid blocking.

 He might have gotten hit a few times, but overall, I'd say he pretty much ran over us. He lived up to the hype in my eyes. He's a big guy and runs hard....he's tough to bring down.

I agree. Although I remember seeing Tyler Driggers put him down hard in the first qtr on a 4th and short.
I'd like to believe that This haus walked away from this game with a new found respect for the tigers.

But about Whitsides, I think we'll be watching him in a D1 school on saturdays in the future. Might just be watchin this kid on Sundays some day.

I watched him tonight and last week as well and I will have to say that was the first time I saw him stopped dead in his tracks for a loss.

Come, come now GM. Do you REALLY expect him to be on here still talking? The way the rookies work is talk crap until your team is done, then never come back and take it. It's like all the scientists that say God isn't real. If he is and they were wrong, they'll probably not be around when it's all over to have anybody tell them their wrong. It's a no lose situation.

Just got in. What a great game. Both teams played their hearts out. After watching SLC completly roll over Permian earlier it was nice to see a close back and forth game.

Very competitive. I was a little surprised that both defenses gave up so much yardage. Whiteside had another great game. But so did the running back from Snyder. He made so many people miss and just never stopped. Great effort by both teams.

Whiteside is a baller! But so are those hog mollies that block. Great job by the Lion O-line tonight.

Vernon played Midland Christian the 2nd game of the year. This is in no way the same team. Vernon's blocking schemes are much improved as well as the defense.

I did not see any players attempting to hurt the others. Sour Grapes on who stated that.

Saw a lot of mutual respect from both teams.

Both teams had some mistakes but Vernon just about killed themselves tonight with all the turnovers. The punt muff was terrible. AFter stopping the Tigers then to turn around and give them 40 yards of field position what would you expect except a TD for that mistake. Snyder's offense was much better than I thought they were going to be. The back just bounced off, broke tackles and never stopped. He was impressive. Snyder was close to scoreing at the end of the game and the penalty was cruical. But like some other posters stated that was not the reason that Vernon won the game. That being said the game was that close.

Great game and a great win for the Lions. Too many people have forgot about the program that Vernon has. Out of the last 4 years (Coach Hall era) The Lions have made the playoffs 3 out of 4 years. Been to the semi finals once and now to the regional final. Lost a first round game to a very good Gainesville team last year. These boys have earned some respect.

Don't let those 5 losses fool you. 2 were in overtime and one was a loss 5 point loss to Decatur one was a 7 point loss to Graham. Midland Christian beat the Lions pretty bad but it was the 2nd game of the year.

I'm just so proud of these players and the entire community for supporting them. We have had community pep rally's prior to each game. (Hey Who!! I didn't see you but I had my Lion Pride and "B Lock" sign tonight). I was yelling as loud as I could, but it was so cold!!!! Maybe we will be louder next week.

Great game tonight.

Congrats to Vernon on another great win, and congrats to Snyder on another great season! Wish I could have been at this game, it sounds like it was a great game. Good luck to Vernon, from here on out. You have a first class program, and much to be proud of.
