I was procrastinating having to go in to work today so forgive me.

NOTE: All data presented here includes only the last 10 years of playoffs (1996-2005)

In attempting to come up with various ways of measuring and comparing playoff dominance I've come up with various rankings, each with their plusses and minuses:

Highest Average Margin of Victory in Playoff Games in One Year
(this was compiled using the margins of victory of ALL games of ALL playoff participants, with losses counting as a negative margin of victory, thus teams that didn't win the title are included)
* - teams with an asterisk were NOT state champs

5A
1. 2003 - GP North Shore - 32.2
2. 1996 - Lewisville - 31.2

4. 2000 - Stratford - 31.2
5. 2001 - Roscoe* - 31.0

State Champs ranked by their closest playoff game
(in other words, if you looked at every game the following teams played in their respective championship runs, the game listed is the closest any team came to beating them in the playoffs that year)
1. 1999 2A-1 Mart - won by 29 pts over Comfort in the Semis (the other wins were by 35, 38, 49, and 33 pts)
2. 1996 5A-1 Lewisville - won by 22 pts over Duncanville in Bidistrict
3. 1999 2A-2 Celina - won by 20 pts over Seymour in Area
4. 2002 2A-1 Corrigan-Camden - won by 19 pts over Bangs in Finals
5. 2003 3A-2 Atlanta - won by 18 pts over Vernon in Semis
6. 2002 1A Petrolia - won by 17 pts over Munday in Area
7. 2003 5A-1 North Shore - won by 16 pts over The Woodlands in Finals
2005 2A-2 Celina - won by 16 pts over Omaha Pewitt in Finals
2001 1A - Burkeville - won by 16 pts over Shiner in Regional semis

One could make the case that the State Champion in a single-elimination playoff bracket has a pretty good claim on being the #1 team in the field and that the 2nd place team would have to come from one of the 5 or 6 opponents the champ played during their playoff run.

Looking at closest games (smallest margins of victory) of every state champ over the past 10 years their are 94 teams that can claim that they came the closest to beating the eventual champ in the playoffs (and thus, have a good claim to #2).

Out of the 94,

33 of them played the eventual champ in the State Finals
28 of them played the eventual champ in the Semifinals
11 of them played the eventual champ in the Quarterfinals
16 played the eventual champ in the Area or Regional rounds
and 11 gave the eventual champ their closest call in the Bidistrict round . The 7 closest games out of those 11 are listed below.

7 Possible #1 vs. #2 Bidistrict Matchups
1. 2002 5A-1 Bidistrict - Austin Bowie lost by 1 pt 16-17 to eventual champ Converse Judson
2. 2001 4A-1 Bidistrict - Waxahachie lost by 1 pt 23-24 to eventual champ Denton Ryan
3. 2005 3A-2 Bidistrict - Brownsboro lost by 1 pt 13-14 to eventual champ Tatum
