View Full Version : Longhorns lead Big 12 in academic all-conference selections

Dallas, Texas -- The Big 12 Conference named its 2006 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team on Tuesday, and Texas led the conference with 24 selections, including 14 on the first team.

The first team included junior LB Scott Derry, senior QB Adair Fragoso, redshirt freshman P Trevor Gerland, junior C Dallas Griffin, junior WR Nate Jones, junior DT Derek Lokey, redshirt freshman QB Colt McCoy, senior QB Mark McCoy, senior DB Brandon McFarling, redshirt freshman TE Mac McWhorter, sophomore RB Chris Ogbonnaya, redshirt freshman OL Charlie Tanner, senior WR Clayton Tefteller and redshirt freshman OT Adam Ulatoski.

Griffin has now earned first-team honors all three of his years at Texas, while this is the second time Derry has named to the first team. Lokey earned first-team honors for the first time after being named to the second team in 2005.

Ten others were named to the 2006 second team, including senior RB Sam Areias, senior CB Tarell Brown, senior PK Ben Campos, sophomore RB Jamaal Charles, junior S Marcus Griffin, redshirt freshman OL Chris Hall, senior P Greg Johnson, senior FB Marcus Myers, senior TE Neale Tweedie and sophomore TE Peter Ullman.

This is the third straight year Tweedie has been named to the team after earning a spot on the first team last year, and the second team in 2004. Ullman also earned first-team honors last year, while Johnson and Areias are on the second team for the second-straight year.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-league team consisted of 92 first team members combined with 54 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
