Looks like Vernon and Sweetwater's playoff histories are very evenly matched.

I just realized that in 2003 & 2004, our score was the same the last game of the playoffs. :nerd:

Great info. Yes Sweetwater and Vernon both have rich playoff histories that are almost identical.

I gotta look ahead... if the two teams win out up to region, which will be a VERY tough road, Cuero and Hondo would play... that'll take two threads to give that playoff history...

Question: Didn't Sweetwater go to the playoffs and have a few more appearances? I have a copy of this year's Sweetwater program and there is a page in the program dedicated to the Mustang Bowl Championship Flag Sponsors. Each of the flags that fly at the bowl represents a playoff appearance (Someone from Sweetwater please validate if you know what I'm talking about or if this is correct/incorrect).

*1916 - Sweetwater was the Champs of West Texas
1927 - Champs of West Texas
1931 - Bi District
1932 - Quarter Finals
1939 - Quarter Finals
1941 - Bi District
1957 - State Finalist
1958 - Bi District
*1959 - Tri-Champs
*1960 - Tri-Champs
1964 - Bi District
1984 - Semi-Finalist
1985 - State Champs
1986 - Regional Finalist
1987 - Semi-Finalist
1988 - Bi District
*1989 - Area (not 1990).
1991 - Semi-Finalist
1992 - Area
1993 - Regional Finalist
1994 - Area
1995 - Regional Finalist
1996 - Regional Finalist
1997 - Quarter Finalist
2000 - Area
2001 - Area
2002 - Quarter Finals
2003 – Regional Finalist

*1916 - Sweetwater was the Champs of West Texas
*1959 - Tri-Champs
*1960 - Tri-Champs
*1989 - Area (not 1990).

*1916 - Prior to 1920 there were football playoffs of a sort several years going back to around 1912 or 1913 but the UIL didn't put their official stamp on it until 1920 so Sweetwater very well could have been the equivalent of a regional champ back at the time. They went 7-1-1 that year.

*1959 and 1960 Tri-Champs - this refers to the fact that there was a 3-way tie for district champion, but only the team that won whatever tiebreak system was used at the time advanced to the playoffs. In 1959 the playoff rep from Sweetwater's district was Lamesa, and in 1960 it was Snyder.

*1989 - Sweetwater didn't make the playoffs that year as they lost to district champ Big Spring, runnerup Monahans and also lost to Andrews in district play as well. Big Spring and Monahans tore through region I that year and had a huge rematch in the State Quarterfinals (Region I Finals) with Big Spring edging Monahans out 20-19. Big Spring went on to be clobbered by eventual state champ Tyler Chapel Hill (see history above on the Division I page) 59-6. So 1989 is an error and should be 1990. In 1990 Sweetwater was district runnerup to Big Spring and lost to Snyder in the area round of the playoffs.

Who-dun-it!!?
