TexasFootball 3A Picks

11/16/2006

DIVISION I
This division might be better named "Gilmer -- and 30 others." The Buckeyes are the clear favorites.

Other than No. 10 Decatur (which has a tough first-round game vs. No. 11 Wylie), the Buckeyes are the only Top 10 team in Division I. But there's a reason why games aren't played on paper.

Below, we break down every team in this bracket ... speaking of, make sure to have it handy.

Region I
High Expectations ...

Decatur (10-0) – QB Brandon Cobb has passed for more than 1,500 yards and rushed for more than 1,000 yards.
Canyon (8-2) – The offense is averaging 33.0 points per contest and should take the Eagles deep into the bracket.
Abilene Wylie (8-2) – An impressive win over Sweetwater elevated the Bulldogs’ status.
If things go right ...

WF Hirschi (7-3) – Could make noise with solid defense.
Fort Stockton (7-3) – Finished third in district and struggled on offense, but bracket looks favorable.
Happy just to dance ...

Andrews (3-7) – Dropped from 4A and still didn't have a while lot of success. Andrews benefited from four-team district.
Levelland (2-8) – One win in district got Levelland in.
TexasFootball.com's pick: Everything hinges on the first-round game between Decatur and Wylie (their last meeting shown at right). WIth so much offensive power, Decatur gets the nod, and from there, Decatur handles Fort Stockton to move on to the state semifinals.

Region II
High Expectations ...

Royse City (9-1) – The offense scored 410 total points and defense allowed just 189. WR Carlos Gallegos is a playmaker.
Gilmer (10-0) – Best offense in Class 3A (55.4 point per game), expects nothing short of the state finals.
If things go right ...

Texarkana Liberty-Elyau (7-3) – Once considered among the elite teams, the Leopards loss to Atlanta in the season finale concluded a disappointing regular season. But potential still exists.
Prosper (8-2) – Decent team but has not fared well against tough opponents.
Dallas Roosevelt (7-2) – Chance to shine with quarterback Darrique Giles.
Kennedale (7-3) – Allowing less than 14 points per game.
Mabank (6-4) – Rebounded well after losing first three games of the season.
Happy just to dance ...

Tyler Chapel Hill (5-5) – A suspect defense means the Bulldogs need lots of offense.
TexasFootball.com's pick: It's not like they'll sleepwalk in, because Liberty-Elyau will be up for the challenge, but moving on will be Gilmer, which beats Royse City in the Region II-3A finals.

Region III
High Expectations ...

Hutto (7-2) – RB Shiloh Wampler and QB Jeremy Kerley have combined for more than 1,600 rushing yards.
Diboll (8-2) – Quarterback Gilbert Moye is among the top athletes in Class 3A and will look to repeat success he had with Jasper in 2004.
Silsbee (8-2) – Quarterback William Harper is a playmaker on the ground and through the air, and he helped Silsbee give West Orange-Stark all it could handle.
Palestine (8-2) – Difficult first-round matchup with Diboll, but Palestine could make a deep run.
Bellville (8-2) – Athlete Brandon Harris is dangerous on both sides of the ball. He leads the team in receiving yards and interceptions.
If things go right ...

Splendora (6-4) – Has potential but lost four of first five games.
Robinson (8-2) – Overrated eight-win season but dangerous.
Happy just to dance ...

West Columbia (6-4) – Falls big to Bellville in first round.
TexasFootball.com's pick: This bracket could easily see four different teams advancing. We're not sure about any of the possibilities, but our gut is telling us take Palestine over Bellville to move on to the state semifinals.

Region IV
High Expectations ...

Ingleside (9-1) – Underrated team should fly through the weakest of the four regions.
If things go right ...

La Vernia (7-3) – Played strong against tough teams in Cuero and Luling.
Zapata (6-4) – District 31-3A champs with 4-0 record.
La Feria (6-3) – Decent defense give a shot at success.
Happy just to dance ...

Bandera (4-6) – This could be a the cindrella of the bunch, but getting beat up in the regular season might bak the glass slipper.
Pleasanton (5-5) – Will likely advance past weak first-round matchup in Pearsall, but anything further is questionable.
Pearsall (3-7) – Poor defense yields loads of points.
Gonzales (3-7) – Might serve as a mere tune-up for Ingleside in the first round.
TexasFootball.com's pick: With half the field at .500 or under, this appears to be Ingleside's bracket to lose. They won't. Ingleside will beat Bandera to advance to the state semifinals.

DIVISION I PREDICTIONS:
We really think each region advances the best team possible. That leaves us with Decatur, Gilmer, Palestine and Ingleside.
On one half, Decatur might have an offense that can score with most teams -- most teams not named Gilmer. The Buckeyes make their second finals appearance in three years when Gilmer beats Decatur. On the other half, it will be a tight game, but Palestine will prevail over Ingleside to create an all-East Texas finals.

This might be an offense vs. defense kind of game, and in our eyes, good offense always wins out. Gilmer beats Palestine for its second state championship in three years.

DIVISION II
While Gilmer appears the heavy favorite in DI, this division has a large handful of programs all of which have a pretty equal shot at the title.

Below, we break down every team in this bracket ... speaking of, make sure to have it handy.

Region I
High Expectations ...

Monahans (9-1) – Among the most balanced teams in Class 3A scoring nearly 40 points and allowing less than 9 points per contest.
Sweetwater (8-2) – Guaranteed not to face Tatum, who knocked the Mustangs out of the Class 3A state semifinals last year and moved to Class 2A.
Argyle (7-3) – Played in Class 2A state finals last year and adjusted well this year with quarterback JJ Harp.
Clint (9-1) – Only loss came to Monahans and benefits from first-round bye.
Midland Greenwood (9-1) – Got better as season progressed and offense is scoring nearly 40 points per contest.
Snyder (7-3) – Preseason thoughts were high but soon faded; that can change if it can avenge its season-opening loss to Monahans in a probable second-round matchup.
Sanger (8-2) – Running back Nathan Pegues needs to win big games.
If things go right ...

Perryton (7-3) – Able to score points and held opponents to less than 15 points per contest.
Seminole (8-2) – Undefeated in District 4-3A.
Dalhart (8-2) – Played some weak opponents but defense is strong.
Happy just to dance ...

Brownfield (3-7) – Three wins in regular season behind an offense that averages 16.0 points per game.
Vernon (5-5) – Struggled to grab playoff birth.
Graham (5-5) – Won weak District 6-3A.
Clyde (5-5) – Clyde allowed much more points than scored.
TexasFootball.com's pick: We believe the winner between Monahans and Sweetwater will move on to the regional finals, and we're going with the latter. After that win, Sweetwater will beat Sanger to advance out of Region I.

Region II
High Expectations ...

Celina (10-0) – Class 2A DII defending state champions are scoring 42.5 points per game while allowing just a TD per game.
Dallas Madison (9-0) – Likely to go back to regional semifinals behind tailback Shawnbrey McNeal and quarterback J.L. Wallace.
Brownsboro (7-3) – Won District 14-3A but struggled against good teams.
Emory Rains (8-2) – Stout defense coupled with able offense can send them deep through a weak bracket.
If things go right ...

West (8-2) – Strong defense allowing less than 13 points per game but offense lacks firepower at times.
Lake Worth (7-3) – Tailback DeAndre Davis has rushed for 1,321 yards this season.
Canton (6-4) – Lost to several weak opponents, but bracket shaped up for a decent run.
Atlanta (4-6) – Won only four games but beat Liberty-Eylau for the district title.
Happy just to dance ...

Gladewater (4-6) – Preseason hopes were high, but Gladewater allowed far too many touchdowns.
Quinlan Ford (5-5) – Among the weakest offenses in the region.
Crandall (5-5) – Highest scoring offense in a suspect district.
Spring Hill (6-4) – Spring Hill struggled against the 2006 playoff opponents it faced.
Pleasant Grove (3-7) – Allowed 320 points this season.
Pilot Point (6-4) – Tough first-round matchup with Emory Rains will limit struggling offense.
Glen Rose (5-5) – Offense needs to make up for a defense prine to giving up points, yards.
Kaufman (5-5) – Scored only two more points than allowed this season. That won't get it done in the postseason.
TexasFootball.com's pick: So much for adjusting to the 3A level of play. Celina will beat Brownsboro to make it to the state semifinals.

Region III
High Expectations ...

Cameron Yoe (6-4) – Despite four losses, quarterback Brian Scott puts the Yoemen in position to win any game.
West Orange-Stark (10-0) – Quarterback Andre Bevil has passed for more than 1,600 yards while throwing 21 touchdowns.
Giddings (10-0) – Quarterback Brock Fitzhenry has rushed for more than 2,000 yards and can lead the Buffaloes to a state finals appearance.
China Spring (8-2) – Quarterback Dustin Eskew is the leading passer in Central Texas with more than 2,700 yards.
Liberty Hill (7-2) – Among the best rushing teams in Class 3A with a talented tandem in Brent Bode and Doug Allman.
If things go right ...

Waco La Vega (8-2) – Tailback Kourtney Parr and quarterback Danzel Wilson lead a powerful offensive attack.
Madisonville (7-3) – Could make noise in playoffs with balanced offense and decent defense.
Rusk (7-3) – Vulnerable defense but able to score behind Justin Sturns.
Wharton (7-3) – Led district in scoring offense but defense allowed nearly 30 points per game.
Oakhurst (8-2) – Champs in District 22-3A yielding only 14.6 points per game.
La Grange (8-2) – Tailback Hunter Callis and quarterback Matt Woods fuel a dangerous offense.
Sweeny (8-2) – Undefeated with eight wins in District 24-3A.
Crockett (6-4) – Offense is averaging nearly 38 points per game.
Happy just to dance ...

Liberty (4-6) – Allowed more than 20 points per game.
Kirbyville (6-4) – Played decent in tough district but still lost the bigger games.
Mexia (3-7) – Only three wins, but quarterback Kendrick Johnson has the knack to rise above the competition.
TexasFootball.com's pick: In a game that wouldn't let down if it were the state finals, Giddings will narrowly hold off Liberty Hill to take the Region II crown.

Region IV
High Expectations ...

Wimberley (9-1) – Defending Division I champs are stuck in a competitive bracket. Quarterback Ricky Beatty is among the best passers in Class 3A.
Devine (9-1) – Extremely high expectations after winning first nine games but lost by 25 points to rival Hondo in regular season finale.
Cuero (10-0) – Trip back to state semifinals is highly probable, but the Gobblers face tough region.
Rio Hondo (9-1) – Lost district to Port Isabel but among the best offensive and defensive teams in Class 3A.
Hondo (10-0) – Scoring nearly 50 points per game and allowing just 8.9 points.
Orange Grove (9-1) – Strong defense has yielded just 12 points per game this season.
Port Isabel (8-2) – Not an explosive team but knows how to win games.
If things go right ...

Luling (7-3) – Scored fewer points then it allowed but still won district.
Medina Valley (7-3) – Undefeated in District 27-3A.
Raymondville (6-4) – High-scoring offense but failed to win big games.
Lytle (6-4) – Defense is playoff-caliber -- and must remain that way in order to upset Hondo in the first round.
Happy just to dance ...

Llano (6-4) – Someone has to go in a four-team district when the last-place team is winless.
Marion (3-7) – Three-win teams have low expectations in the postseason.
Sinton (4-6) – Defense not playoff-caliber.
Yoakum (5-5) – Allowing more than 20 points per game.
Lyford (5-4) – Offense can score but still doomed with first-round matchup with Port Isabel.
TexasFootball.com's pick: Wow -- what a region. As many as seven teams could win this quarter of the DII bracket. However, Cuero will detrhone Wimberley to make it back to the state semifinals.

DIVISION II PREDICTIONS:
On one half, it will be slow going early, but eventually Celina will pull away from Sweetwater fora convincing win and shot at a second-straight title. On the other half, experience will be the key, and since the Gobblers have more if it, Cuero will hold off Giddings to reach the state finals.
And it's there all the work over the last few years will pay off. Though only losing two games in the last two years, Cuero has no title to show for it. This year there won't be any losses.

Cuero will beat Celina for the Division II championship.
