TexasFootball 3A Picks
11/16/2006
DIVISION I
This division might be better named "Gilmer -- and 30 others." The Buckeyes are the clear favorites.
Other than No. 10 Decatur (which has a tough first-round game vs. No. 11 Wylie), the Buckeyes are the only Top 10 team in Division I. But there's a reason why games aren't played on paper.
Below, we break down every team in this bracket ... speaking of, make sure to have it handy.
Region I
High Expectations ...
Decatur (10-0) – QB Brandon Cobb has passed for more than 1,500 yards and rushed for more than 1,000 yards.
Canyon (8-2) – The offense is averaging 33.0 points per contest and should take the Eagles deep into the bracket.
Abilene Wylie (8-2) – An impressive win over Sweetwater elevated the Bulldogs’ status.
If things go right ...
WF Hirschi (7-3) – Could make noise with solid defense.
Fort Stockton (7-3) – Finished third in district and struggled on offense, but bracket looks favorable.
Happy just to dance ...
Andrews (3-7) – Dropped from 4A and still didn't have a while lot of success. Andrews benefited from four-team district.
Levelland (2-8) – One win in district got Levelland in.
TexasFootball.com's pick: Everything hinges on the first-round game between Decatur and Wylie (their last meeting shown at right). WIth so much offensive power, Decatur gets the nod, and from there, Decatur handles Fort Stockton to move on to the state semifinals.
Region II
High Expectations ...
Royse City (9-1) – The offense scored 410 total points and defense allowed just 189. WR Carlos Gallegos is a playmaker.
Gilmer (10-0) – Best offense in Class 3A (55.4 point per game), expects nothing short of the state finals.
If things go right ...
Texarkana Liberty-Elyau (7-3) – Once considered among the elite teams, the Leopards loss to Atlanta in the season finale concluded a disappointing regular season. But potential still exists.
Prosper (8-2) – Decent team but has not fared well against tough opponents.
Dallas Roosevelt (7-2) – Chance to shine with quarterback Darrique Giles.
Kennedale (7-3) – Allowing less than 14 points per game.
Mabank (6-4) – Rebounded well after losing first three games of the season.
Happy just to dance ...
Tyler Chapel Hill (5-5) – A suspect defense means the Bulldogs need lots of offense.
TexasFootball.com's pick: It's not like they'll sleepwalk in, because Liberty-Elyau will be up for the challenge, but moving on will be Gilmer, which beats Royse City in the Region II-3A finals.
Region III
High Expectations ...
Hutto (7-2) – RB Shiloh Wampler and QB Jeremy Kerley have combined for more than 1,600 rushing yards.
Diboll (8-2) – Quarterback Gilbert Moye is among the top athletes in Class 3A and will look to repeat success he had with Jasper in 2004.
Silsbee (8-2) – Quarterback William Harper is a playmaker on the ground and through the air, and he helped Silsbee give West Orange-Stark all it could handle.
Palestine (8-2) – Difficult first-round matchup with Diboll, but Palestine could make a deep run.
Bellville (8-2) – Athlete Brandon Harris is dangerous on both sides of the ball. He leads the team in receiving yards and interceptions.
If things go right ...
Splendora (6-4) – Has potential but lost four of first five games.
Robinson (8-2) – Overrated eight-win season but dangerous.
Happy just to dance ...
West Columbia (6-4) – Falls big to Bellville in first round.
TexasFootball.com's pick: This bracket could easily see four different teams advancing. We're not sure about any of the possibilities, but our gut is telling us take Palestine over Bellville to move on to the state semifinals.
Region IV
High Expectations ...
Ingleside (9-1) – Underrated team should fly through the weakest of the four regions.
If things go right ...
La Vernia (7-3) – Played strong against tough teams in Cuero and Luling.
Zapata (6-4) – District 31-3A champs with 4-0 record.
La Feria (6-3) – Decent defense give a shot at success.
Happy just to dance ...
Bandera (4-6) – This could be a the cindrella of the bunch, but getting beat up in the regular season might bak the glass slipper.
Pleasanton (5-5) – Will likely advance past weak first-round matchup in Pearsall, but anything further is questionable.
Pearsall (3-7) – Poor defense yields loads of points.
Gonzales (3-7) – Might serve as a mere tune-up for Ingleside in the first round.
TexasFootball.com's pick: With half the field at .500 or under, this appears to be Ingleside's bracket to lose. They won't. Ingleside will beat Bandera to advance to the state semifinals.
DIVISION I PREDICTIONS:
We really think each region advances the best team possible. That leaves us with Decatur, Gilmer, Palestine and Ingleside.
On one half, Decatur might have an offense that can score with most teams -- most teams not named Gilmer. The Buckeyes make their second finals appearance in three years when Gilmer beats Decatur. On the other half, it will be a tight game, but Palestine will prevail over Ingleside to create an all-East Texas finals.
This might be an offense vs. defense kind of game, and in our eyes, good offense always wins out. Gilmer beats Palestine for its second state championship in three years.
