Down-low or on the down low is a slang phrase. It is often used to refer to something that is secret or hidden. This may originate from the combined effect of the two words "down" and "low".

One popular usage is to describe men who have sex with men secretly, but who identify themselves as neither homosexual nor bisexual due to being in the closet. This use of the term is often associated with African American men, but this type of sexual behavior exists in all cultures.

So what are you saying? Are you calling us all out as "queers" or something?

I already knew of this alternate meaning and wondered about why the board had that name, but I figured it was none of my business. So I was going to leave the topic of how the board was named "in the closet."

I picked it because we had wanted to do it for a few weeks and when we decided to do it I said "how about the downlow"... kinda like "okay, so here's the down low"... plus it's a "low"er classification... plus it's a catchy name... it didn't do too damn bad...

The word "downlow" evolved from the more familiar low-down. In the 1800s, the original low-down was an adjective meaning low and despicable.

EXAMPLE: My ex-boyfriend Ted is a low-down rat!

In the early 20th century, it became the word for inside information that most Americans are familiar with.

EXAMPLE: So, what's the low-down on Ted?

In the early nineties, the words were flipped and usually appeared in the phrases on the down-low or keep it on the down-low. With the word reversal came a meaning reversal - from a secret revealed to a secret kept.

it also refers to the crotch area....as in:

I have 4 boys and I have never heard them say it as "nice" as "down low"!!
