11-13-2006, 02:34 PM
Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (7-3A) and Decatur Eagles (8-3A) will meet Friday, 7:30, Dragon Stadium, SLC in this Region I DI game.

The Bulldogs won the district 7-3A championship with a district record of 4-0. The overall record was 8-2, with losses to 4A Brownwood and Wimberley.

The Eagles ended the season as one of the handful of undefeated teams in class 3A and were the 8-3A district champs. (Duh! ;) )

Thoughts? Predictions?

Having seen and played both teams, I have to give Wylie the edge because of their defense and Sandifer's ability to redirect his team in the second half of the game.
Both programs very similar with strong capable QB's
Error free ball will win this one going away.

Wylie's losses were to 4a Brownwood, and Defending State Champion Wimberley...

Opinions from someone who has seen both teams play have are valid opinions.

I have heard a lot about the Decatur QB. This will be the fourth time in 2 years that these two teams have hooked up. Should be interesting and a lot of fun.

This should be a great game.
I wish both teams the best of luck and health in the process.
Winner could take D1

this will be the 4th time in 3 years. Just to let you know. Abilene Wylie has a great program, but so does Decatur. I have watched Abilene Wylie on tape and watched Decatur in person enough times to be able to say this next comment without hesitation. The team with the LEAST amount of turnovers WILL WIN the ballgame. Decatur has been real good in the turnover margin this year (i believe it is +27 or 28), however i dont know what Wylie's turnover margin is. Both teams have great coaches that have made an enourmous impact at their schools, both teams will have big plays, both teams will have emotion, but it will be the team that plays the best with that emotion and takes care of the ball. I know that i am baised and i want to see Decatur win (b/c i was on Decatur's 2004 football team that lost), but they will not win if they can not hold onto the ball. I give Decatur a slight advantage going into the game because they have NEVER lost at southlake carrol stadium (knock on wood). Message to the Decatur players: you are NOT guaranteed another week!!!!!!!!!

I believe that from Nov. of 2004 to Nov. of 2006 is a span of two years, not 3 years, as I post earlier. At least an education in Abilene would see it that way. Maybe I give Wylie the edge because Decatur can't score well on the math TAKS.

In fact, it is about 23 months and three weeks give or take a day or two, which is less than 2 years. Since you played on that team you would probably like to forget it anyway.

i thought you meant 2 football seasons. I get it know. Just FYI i got an 800 on the SAT math, so that is what the Decatur education can get you. ( NO Shot intented, just thought a cheap shot was aimed at me)

by Decatur to put your "hands" team in on kick-off return.:(

Not to dwell on the fact, but Decatur did beat Abilene Wylie 44-7 in week 6 of the 2004 season before losing in week 13. So Over 2 years. FYI. No can we move on and talk about this years game? Go Decatur!!!

Not direct shot taken. Just some harmless fun. Hope you weren't offended, because it really wasn't something that amounted to a hill of beans, nor does it make any difference this weekend.

Would love to see a repeat of '04 personally.

This is gonna be a great game. From what I've heard about Wylie is they have a good running and passing game, better defense than offense, great coach and don't hurt themselves with mistakes.

What a minute I just described Decatur too! Think these teams are mirrors of each other. Decatur has the edge for playing in Southlake, Wylie has the edge in mojo. I would be surprised if it's decided before the 4:00 minute mark in the fourth. Hope no teams makes any major mistakes and the winner goes deep in the playoffs.

Decatur wins 3 pooch kicks to 2.

After watching both teams live, I have to pick Wylie by 10. But what do I know? If I could say anything to either team it would be stop that QB...granted there is talent on both teams below the QB position but that is the only position where either team has a gamebreaker.

11-13-2006, 06:42 PM
being as i watched both teams...this one will be battle of the qb's..(if it hasn't been said already).....i pick Wylie in this one solely because you can't tackle Gary Edwards and the fact that Hugh Sandifer makes amazing adjustments when it comes down to it...he'll get this game won and move on to the 2nd round with plenty of game planning and adjustments if necessary

Ha, that's seems like something Sandifer would try too. Win the coin flip and elect to kick, then pooch it. I would love to see that.

as weird as this might sound, I just hope it's a good game. Of course I'd always like to see the Bulldogs pull it out, but I want to see a clean, safe, exciting, intense, great game ...

I've been on both the winning and not winning (don't like the L word) sides of things, and looking back it's more about the experience. Good luck to both teams, and definitely those seniors who could be playing in their last game.

My pick:
Wylie 28
Decatur 24

I haven't seen Decatur play this year, but I'm going to have to pick them by 3 on a last second field goal. But I would like to see Wylie win, but the game in '04 will definitely be on the minds of the sr's this year. I talked to a kid that was a jr. on that '04 team and was hurt and couldn't play. He still wishes they could play again. That was one of the best games I've ever seen.

I found these numbers:

26 catches 344 yards 4 TD's

To put that in perspective...Edwards has completed 79 passes for 1029 yards (don't know how many TD's) so Smith is catching 33% of his passes for 33% of all receiving yards.

He has recieved alot of attention from several Big XII schools and some smaller universities for football. Matt's feet are exceptional for a kid his size and I would say he is a lot loser to 200 than he is 185 possibly even 200+. Matt comes from a great family and is a great kid. Is intersted in maybe playing basketball in College. The problem with 6'3" kids in 3a Basketball is more than not they are used at the post position. He would have to learn a new position in basketball and there arent many coaches that will tkae a project kid when they need to win now and there are so many other options out there to sign that you dont have to take a under sized kid.

I wonder if Edwards is getting any consideration. I'm sure it's mostly from D2 and D3 schools...but maybe somebody should call Leach and remind him about this receiver that he had a few years back that was 5'8 170 (at most) that was lightening quick, a great all-around athlete, and a good kid too. I believe his name was Wes Welker! ;)

Abilene Reporter New's pick::eek: :eek:

Class 3A: Wylie vs. Decatur, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Southlake Carroll’s Dragon Stadium

Decatur (10-0) comes into the game ranked No. 6 in Class 3A by the AP, while Wylie (8-2) picked up enough votes to be tied for 15th.

These two teams have had memorable games in the past during the playoffs, including Wylie’s 14-13 win on its way to the 2004 state title, and it’s almost a sure bet that will be the case again this year.

It’s a shame that a game that will be as good as this one has to take place at such an early point in the postseason, It should be a doozy.

Wylie’s been playing well lately, but Decatur’s undefeated for a reason.

My pick: Decatur by 1.

Wylie (8-2) is led by QB Gary Edwards (1,029 passing yards, 811 rushing).... Decatur (10-0) averaged 38.2 points behind QB Brandon Cobb (1,575 passing yards, 1,032 rushing). Wylie is 2-1 against Decatur in the past three seasons, including a third-round playoff victory in 2004.
