Saw it posted earlier in the week on Smoaky that Gilmer was 31 points away from breaking the regular season scoring record set by Denver City in 1960. With their 49 point effort tonight they now take over the top spot with 554 points scored in ten games.

If they maintain anything close to that pace in the playoffs, they will break Everman's Class 3A points per game average which was a shade above 48 a contest I believe. I hope y'all keep on rollin out there in East Texas and are playing for 5 more weeks!

I just got an email from one of the all-time most enthusiastic fans of the Buckeyes who said we did not break the record and he's pretty upset about it.

The article in the Tyler paper this morning says we came "within 10 points" of the record.

It's going to be hard not to be overconfident in the playoffs after rolling through the regular season like that. But, as the refrain always goes, "Gilmer doesn't play anybody."

They were withing 10 points of breaking their own scoring record. They did set the state record.

How can you break the state record and not break the school record? That's not logical, unless Gilmer used to be in another state.

According to a post on Smoaky.com Gilmer set a school record back in 1930 of 564 points. UIL apparently didn't start keeping records by class untill 1951. That's how!

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew there had to be some explanation for it.

That was probably back in the days when Gilmer REALLY WAS recruiting, from what I've heard from oldtimers around here.

It used to be relatively common for guys in their early 20s to be playing high school football.

Well then it appears they did set the regular season scoring record after all for Class 3A. Everman still holds the 15 game record for scoring though so Gilmer has some work left to do to get that one as well.

Port Isabel's 1994 team during the regular season scored 44.3 points per game on average. That isn't including the playoffs, however. Including the playoffs, the average drops down to 38.7 points per game, but is still impressive.
