Bob Stoops thinks it might be a good idea to scrap the North-South divisional setup in the Big 12.

There's no way everybody could play everybody else every year, of course, but adding one conference game and doing away with the conference championship is an old debate Stoops and a few others would like to see rekindled.

"It would probably be great, throwing out the Big 12 championship game and play everybody like the Pac-10 does, or play an extra conference game and get away from the divisional mix," the Oklahoma coach said Monday.

One benefit would be to shed the rich-man, poor-man imbalance now so entrenched. South teams this year are 13-3 vs. their counterparts in the North. Three South teams are ranked: No. 4 Texas, No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 21 Texas A&M. After Nebraska and Missouri lost last weekend, both to South teams, nobody is ranked in the North.

Only three North teams have winning records. In the South, every team but one has more wins than losses.

He now sees the writing on the wall. He can't beat Mack anymore, can't out recruit him anymore, and things don't look good after AD leaves for the NFL at years end.

not a bad idea - doubt the conference will go for it since the championship game is very big $ maker

Actually, Stoops addressed this issue in 2002 and said the same thing then.

we know it and they know they just have to say that bc the think it makes texas look good but really in truly stoops does have a point..he realizes it is better with no conference championship just like the pac 10

Agree 100% with u, 3afan.
Coaches in SEC and other conferences don't like conference championship game either. If you ask Mack Brown, he'd say he would prefer to do away with also.
However, ADs and colleges as a whole like it because of the money it generates.
This is not Stoops trying to avoid having to play UT every year, it's simply an old discussion being brought up again.

I have a feeling even if they switched to the format he is talking about they would still play texas everyyear just because of the $$ involved.. Cal plays USC everyyear in the pac-10 under the same format stoops was talkin about

we would still have a conference championship game, every conference w/ 12 or more teams is required to have one i believe....

playing games like that would kill rivalries, the teams would have to rotate and there woudl be years w/ no UT/OU, UT/A&M, KSU/KU, OU/OSU, CU/NU, etc..i really dont see the big 12 doing that, ther eis too much money in it....

Cal and USC play every year because the Pac 10 has 9 conference games every year, so every team plays the other 9 teams in teh conference each year...i don't know about yall but 11 conference games and one out of conference games doesnt sound too great to me, thats what we would have to do to keep all the teams playing each other..
