King George.

Best song writer: Willie

I love George Strait, but there is something in REKs music that is missing in Straits. Authenticity I believe. You can sing all day about cowboys but there is something about driving through a snowstorm along a mountan road with your wife and baby daughter in the car that just speaks to me{Snowing on Raton) or coming home to an old girlfiend (Feelin' Good Again).

Willie Nelson's best album was Red Headed Stranger. He sold out after that. Now he is just a burnt out pot head.

10-24-2006, 08:26 PM
First of all, Pudlugger should be thrown in jail for that comment. Secondly, I believe Kris Kristofferson is the better songwriter (even though Willie is my favorite singer). And finally, while I love George, all of his stuff sounds exactly alike but you have to give him credit for finding something that works and sticking with it. He does have an amazing voice though.

P.S.-Has anyone else noticed that George Strait plays about 3 chords throughout the entire concert, the rest of the time he just holds the guitar and sings?

Hah! Willie went Hollywood with Nelson Riddle. Not a true Texan. More like a Dixie Chick with a pony tail and better looking!:D

I gotta go with either George or Willie
But you also got Gary Stewart, Roger Creager, REK, Randy Rodgers, Kevin Fowler, Pat Green, etc.

I prolly have 12 Willie Nelson albums but the guy has gone south. More of a movie persona than a true Texas singer/songwriter. Sorry, his latest stuff doesn't resonate with me. But heh, whatever. It is a matter of taste.

There once was a time when I would agree that Willie was king, but his music seemed to drift away from authentic Texan character to something else, more west coast really. I think Willie would rather hang out with Hollywood movie star types than the regular folks he made famous in his early work. Somehow I don't see Willie hanging out in Lukenbach Texas anymore. But Hey, some of you all probably like Barbara Streisand too, right Tweeder215?:D

Also DJ Screw could be a huge nomination. Made his own music.

They grew up in the Dallas area. They went to different high schools (one of them I believe in Richardson), but they knew each other and did play together. They headed out to San Francisco around 1965, and the rest is history.

You have to be kidding me, right??? REK has one of the worst voices in Texas Music. The only voice that I would say might be worse is Kevn Fowler's...and that's just because it's so damn whiny. REK is living proof that if you can write a catchy enough song that you don't have to sound good singing it and you can still make a career out of it.
