View Full Version : You don't have many ties in college football

that is because of the overtime that they have installed in the rules. The teams usually play till someone has won. Thus ties have all but been eliminated.

Tiger if we had had overtime we might have had two more national championships in college football. In 1962 UT was tied by Rice on a fourth quarter td that Rice went for one point since there was still lots of time left. That tie was the only blemish on our record during the regular season and we must remember that back then the national championship was awarded after the regular seasons and bowls didn't count. In overtime UT would have had the big advantage and most likely would have won the game.
The same is for the UT vs Arkansas game in 1964. UT scored in the last minute and went for two points to win it and missed it and lost 13 - 14. We had a great kicker and would have had a tie for sure but they didn't have OT then. Had they had OT we no doubt would have kicked the extra point and had the momentum and advantage in the OT. We were the home team plus Arkansas had only scored on two long passes and a long punt return. With a win we would have probably been the National Champions that year.

I don't know of any lately carter. In fact even in high school football I don't know of too many. Ironic isn't it?

What is also a real shame is that we don't have a winner of the Notre Dame vs Army game in 1946. I bet if they had OT then Army would have won. Aw what might have been. :(

If the game is not stopped due to extenuating circumstances, then there will not be a tie under the current overtime system.

Like adidas said, nowadays you just keep going until someone comes out on top.

I know that college has done a lot to eliminate too much OT. In their playoff system, each team starts from the opponent's 25. But after the second OT, the teams can no longer kick the extra point. They have to go for two.

If the OT rule would have been in effect in 1941 UT might have even had another National Championship. They were tied by Baylor 7 to 7 and the next week lost to TCU but if the Baylor game had had OT with the personnel UT had we probably would have won it and thus been more waked up and ready for TCU and avoided the second upset thus having a perfect season and another National Championship with bowl teams begging us to come.
