West Orange-Stark

1) 1987 - 15-0 4A State Champs with a 17-7 win in the state championship game at Kyle Field. Voted 4A Team of the Decade.

2) 1985 - 11-1-1 - WOS had the eventual 5A state champion Yates team on the ropes in the Astrodome until the 4th Quarter before falling 19-6 (Yates went on to beat Permian 37-0). WOS may have been the second best 5A team in the state that year -- if not, they were one of the best.

3) 1986 - 13-2 State Champs - The Mustangs posted a 21-9 win over McKinney in the Astrodome to get its first state title

4) 2000 - 15-1 State Finalists -- WOS lost to Ennis in Texas Stadium in the 4A D2 championship game, despite beating the D1 State Champion Bay City Blackcats 10-7 earlier that year in the Astrodome (an interesting side note -- Ennis, the D2 champion, had a larger student enrollment than Bay City).

5) 1988 - 12-3 State Finalists -- WOS made its 3rd consecutive trip to the 4A state championship game, but lost to Paris at Kyle Field.

6) I know it's supposed to be limited to just five, but I have to throw the 2005 WOS football team in here for good measure. They almost had the season ended due to Hurricane Rita, which caused major damage to several local stadiums, put the season on hold, and saw a lot of players displaced from their homes for extended periods of time. Despite all that, they still managed to put together a great season before falling to Wimberley, the D1 state champs, in the semifinal game at Katy and ending the year at 12-1.

IHS Fan, maybe you know something about these teams I don't. Any help would be appreciated. WOS87, if you have regular season results on any of the following, could you please post them?

INGLESIDE
1. 1964... 13-2 Class A State Finalists. Started the year ranked #4 in Class A by the Associated Press. Climbed as high as #3, but had dropped to eighth by the end of the year. No matter. Ingleside rolled through three consecutive top-ten opponents, including top-ranked Hull-Daisetta, on their way to a berth in the state finals against unranked Archer City. Archer City pulled off the upset, though, handing the Mustangs their second defeat of the season by a 13-6 margin. Unfortunately, this would mark Ingleside's last trip to the playoffs until 1995. The Mustangs would wind up going 40 years with only one playoff appearance. One player from this 1A team went on to play in the NFL while one other played MLB for a year or two.

2. 1954... Dilley was quite possibly the best team in the state in 1955. The Wolves roared through the '55 campaign, going 12-0 while outscoring their opponents 532-7. The only team they lost to prior to '56 and stretching all the way back to '53? That's right, Emory Bellard's Ingleside squad throttled the Wolves by a 26-7 margin in Regionals (the farthest a Class B team could go at the time). Ingleside's other playoff win was a 25-point thrashing of Banquete in Bi-District.

3. 1962... 13-2 Class A State Finalists. They were an afterthought when the season began, coming off a 2-7 campaign in 1961. But new coach Wayne Wilsher revitalized the once-proud program, paving the way for an astounding 11-game turnaround. Ingleside rolled through the regular season suffering their lone loss to (I believe) Three Rivers. the Although not as dominant as the '64 squad, they still made it through two state-ranked teams before falling to the top-ranked Rotan Yellowhammers, 39-6, in the championship game.

4. 1953... I almost want to put this team in front of the '64 squad, but can't bring myself to bump them up over a team that went to the Finals. Still, second-year Head Coach Emory Bellard (of UT and A&M fame) was setting the groundwork for the wishbone offense during his time in Ingleside. A first-time HC, Bellard had taken Ingleside to the playoffs for the first time in five years in 1952, but it all came together in '53. The team had it all: offense (averaged 38 points per game in the playoffs), defense (only allowed six points in two playoff games... a single TD by Lacoste), and a legendary head coach. Don't have the regular season results, but I've heard that this team went undefeated. Maybe WOS87 can help me out here.

5. 2006... So the season isn't over yet. Big deal. This team has a chance to go down as one of the top five of all time. Making it above number four will be tough, but they have the talent to do it. I will say this: Ingleside has the third- or fourth-most talented team in Region IV and, if the season ended right now, would be the favorites in R4, Division I. This ranking may be a little premature, especially with teams like the '48 squad still out there, but I'll stick to my guns on this one. Let's see if they come out firing or if I'll need 'em to shoot a crow. I just may have a mouth to feed on this one.

Others:
1948- Another Regional crown for Ingleside. Outscored playoff opponents 66-20.

1952- Bellard's first team. Lost a 32-26 heartbreaker to Tidehaven in Bi-District.

1995- RB Bubba Jackson and QB Ryan Peel formed the core of one of the most efficient offenses to come through Ingleside. Beat eighth-ranked Port Isabel in a rainy Area Round game before getting blown out by a fourth-ranked Cuero squad that boasted seven senior D1 players, four of which were recruited by then-SWC teams.

2005- How did a 7-5 team make the list over several undefeated teams? It wasn't what they did during the first part of the year that made them special, it's how they came together the second half. Comprised almost completely of sophomores and juniors (only six seniors on the entire team), sophomore signal caller Travis Chrisman came into his own with the help of two-year junior starters Joel Johnson and Zack Adams at WR. They roared into the playoffs and averaged 40+ points per game through their last six games of the season, culminating with a blowout at the hands of (again) top-ranked Cuero.

10. 2005 Gobblers ( semi finalists) this team had more speed than i've ever seen)

9. 1970 Gobblers state finalists (dont know much about them other than it being Cuero's first trip to the big show)

8. 1985 Gobblers state finalists (made a deep run and fell one game short)

7. 2004 Gobblers State finalists ( heartbreaking loss in state but had a tremendous road to get there)

6. 1998 Gobblers State finalists (was really an underdog year for the Gobblers dealing with other issues with in the city like the flood. Overcame a huge semi-final match with giddings, only to fall short losing to Aledo in the state game.)

5. 1994 Cuero Gobblers (even though cut short) (Questionably the most talented gobbler team ever. Clint Finley, "The house" robinson, lavarre jenkins, matt anderson, melvin barnett, etc.)

4. 1993 Cuero Gobblers (state finalists) (very talented team containing alot of the same players from the 94 team. Had a 6-0 lead in the first half against SLC and gave up 2 TD's in the second half. I remember Cuero had alot of injuries in that game)

3. 1987 Cuero Gobblers (state champs)
(The years of Robert Straight, enough said.. Teams were blown out.)
2. 1973 Gobblers (state Champs) This undefeated year started a streak still an unbelievable mark.)
1. 1974 Gobblers (state Champs) (second year undefeated winning state again)

These are the Top 5 teams Port Isabel has put on the field, IMO. There are others that I'll mention as well.

1981 Port Isabel - State Semi-Finalist lost to eventual state champion Cameron Yoe 25-14.

1994 Port Isabel - This was MY team. I was one of 29 Seniors on this team. Undefeated regular season 10-0. Beat Orange Grove and Carrizo Springs before meeting with #1 Cuero on Nov. 26th in Kingsville. Tied Cuero 20-20 and advanced on penetrations 5-3. Then beat Bandera in the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champions Sealy 34-13. Final record was 13-1-1. 15 games total is still the record for the most games a team from the Rio Grande Valley has played in one season.

2003 Port Isabel - After a slow start with losses to La Vernia and Falfurrias, the 2003 team led by "The Missile" Iracheta, Johnny "Nitro" Nieto, and Gabe Alvarez marched through the rest of the schedule (minus ONE slip up to Lyford) and finished the regular season at 6-3 (the game vs. Los Fresnos was cancelled due to excessive rainfall). The team posted playoff victories over Orange Grove, Hondo, and Liberty Hill before playing in a CLASSIC quadruple overtime game vs. Rice Consolidated in San Antonio, which Port Isabel won 63-61 which come to find out is a record for the most points scored in a playoff game. Port Isabel eventually lost to Marlin in the state semi-finals 41-10.

2002 Port Isabel - After opening the season with a loss to PSJA Memorial, and losing a close game to Los Fresnos, the 2002 Tarpons swept through 32-3A finishing 8-2. Then they posted wins over Bishop, and Aransas Pass, before falling to eventual state champion Bandera in a very close game 27-24. Many locals in Port Isabel believe that had Port Isabel beaten Bandera that year, Port Isabel could have been the team to win it all.

1990 Port Isabel - The 3 Amigos backfield ripped defenses apart, finishing 9-1 in the regular season and tri-district champions with Lyford and (of all teams) Progreso. The 1990 Tarpons posted playoff victories over San Diego, Taft, and Hondo, before losing to Sinton in the state quarterfinals in McAllen.

Other teams worth mentioning...

2004 Port Isabel - Lando Ochoa, Frankie Herrera, and Johnny Nieto were the leaders of this team who finished the regular season 9-1. Eventually lost to Hallettsville in the 3rd round 10-0.

1988 Port Isabel - Featured RB Chad Flores. Finished the regular season undefeated 10-0. Lost to "The Howling Bear" CC West Oso in the 2nd round.

1980 Port Isabel - Advanced to the state quarterfinals. Tied Van Vleck 6-6 but lost on penetrations. Had Port Isabel gotten another penetration, it would have advanced instead of Van Vleck via 1st downs. (I have heard it was 6-6, and 0-0, I'll try to verify)

There are other teams that were VERY good, but I don't mention them mainly because I don't have much knowledge of those particular teams. The 1978 team was excellent, but I don't know much about them other than the fact my older brother played on that team, and had a stud RB by the name of Travis Sanders.

For Wylie...

1. 2004 (12-3) State Champs...this team matured all season long and kept making plays in every game. The defense was average at best between the 20's...but was absolutely lights out in the red zone. They won the state championship over Cuero on a last second FG (set up by an excellent 45 yd run by QB Case Keenum on a 3rd and 12 play with 30 second left). However, I still think the most memorable game was in the state quarterfinals against Decatur, whom they had lost to 42-6 in the regular season. Wylie got up 14-6 at half, Decatur scores on it's 1st possession and only kicks an XP. Though Decatur shut down Wylie's offense in the 2nd half, they were unable to score again on Wylie. They got inside the Wylie red zone 4 times in 2nd half but had a missed FG, failed to convert on a 4th down, a forced fumble inside the 5, and finally an INT to seal the game. Wylie 14 Decatur 13

2. 2000 (14-1) State Finalists...one of the best team defensive performances I have ever seen. They gave up 7 points in district, and that was late in the game against Merkel when the backups were playing. They had some college level talent (D2/D3) but nobody that was absolutely amazing. However, they grasped the team concept and checked the egos at the door and played as a team. They crushed #1 Aledo in the 2nd round (30-10) and followed that up by beating #2 Lamesa 36-0 in the state quarters. Wylie was up 21-0 in the middle of the 1st quarter and 30-0 at halftime. They beat preseason #1 Everman 20-13 (a very young Everman team that saw many of the same players win state in 01 and 02) in the semifinals before falling to a Taurean Henderson-led Gatesville Hornets team 14-10 in the state finals. Henderson came into the game averaging 195 yds/game and Wylie held him to right at 100 yards for the game.

3. 2001 (10-1) District Champs...A team that never reached it's full potential. The only Wylie team to start the season in the Top 5 in the AP, they stayed there throughout the regular season, finishing at #3 behid Everman and Forney. Many figured that the winner of Everman and Forney would matchup with Wylie, who was returning their QB, RB, and TE/FS from the 2000 squad, in the semifinals. However, this was not to be as an underrated Vernon squad showed up in Weatherford and beat a Wylie team that didn't seem that it was that prepared for the game, a trademark of head coach Hugh Sandifer's teams. The team was lead by QB Caleb Ensor (ACU), Danny Ruth (Tech/HSU for baseball) and TE/FS John Lampert (Purdue).

4. 2005 (10-3) State Quarterfinals...the year of Case Keenum. in 13 games, he threw 2436 yds (65% completion, 20 TD's, 7 INT's) and ran for another 963 yds (7.1 yds/carry, 14 TD's). As the 3rd year starter on a team that had lost almost everybody else from the state championship squad of '04, he put this team on his back and lead them to the state quarterfinals, where they fell to Gainesville 25-22. Anybody that saw him play will agree that he was a great leader and an exceptional athlete. Whether it was leading his team back from certain defeat against Canyon or hurdling a defender in the 4th quarter against Gainesville to keep the game alive, Case was willing to lay it all on the line for his team.

5. Wanna help me out here pero chato? 94 or 95 teams maybe???

For Celina:

2000- (16-0) 9 all-state players, including QB Herrin, the only QB in Texas history to start and win three state championship games.

2005- (16-0) 803-75 points for and against

1999- (16-0) closest playoff game was 28-8 against Seymour in the second round.

1995- (15-1) RB Martin second all-time leading scorer in HSFB history (863? points)

1974- (13-1-1) Only team Big Sandy did not beat from 1973-75 w/David Overstreet and Lovie Smith, etc. BS scored 824 points in 1975, a national record for more than twenty years.

2001- (16-0) 4th consecutive state title, 50th consecutive win during the regular season

1998- (14-2) 19 points allowed in six playoff games

His name is Eric Williams. Yes, he was 6'2" and 215 lbs. He played college ball at UT, but didn't play much. I also remember that munchkin running back from Aldine MacArthur - 5'3" and quick. We knocked him out of the game in the 3rd or 4th quarter, but before that he was scatting all over the field. That was WO-S very first playoff win in school history, and it was a fantastic game. We had to make a two point conversion late to win it (22 - 21). I have that game on video tape.

4t. 1991(I forget but if I am not mistaken Regional Semi-finalist(?)- Lost to Enda)

*If you recall we lost by a point 15-14, but had many opportunities to win that game and eventually played for the State Championship Title that many thought we would have won. We had a lot a bad calls that game and we missed the field goal that would have won it for us in the end. Off the upright!!! One reason I hate UT's Royal Memorial Stadium!!

The 2000 team with both Adrian and Emi was salty, too. Too bad Emi had to take over at QB in the middle of the playoffs. You guys could've gone much farther than Bandera had Adrian not been injured.

Everman

1. 2001 (15-0) Clas 3A Div. 1 State Champs: This team was the deepest Everman team ever, they went two deep at every position and they rolled through most of the playoffs except for the area round classic against Forney and the state title game against Sinton. During the regular season Everman notched a victory against 4A Top 10 Waxahachie who had earlier beaten Southlake Carroll...Everman beat Waxahachie 13-7, the Indians lost only two other games the rest of the season a controversial 21-16 loss to eventual 4A Division 2 champ Ennis and a 27-24 loss to Denton Ryan in the playoffs (a game Waxahachie held a 21-3 lead in) Most agree that Everman team possibly could have won it all in 4A.

2. 2002 (14-1) Class 3A Division 1 State Champs: The most talented team to come through Everman this team was not as deep as the 2001 team but they were experience and put up unreal numbers. This team had one slip up in the regular season in a shocking loss to Kenendale. Everman averaged over 46 points per game for the season and they rolled their first three playoff opponents 78-0, 37-0 and 50-10 before winning a tough state semi-final game against Forney 21-14. Everman would eventually knock off Burnet 35-14 in the state championship game.

3. 2005 (9-4) Class 4A Regional Semi-Finalists: Led by sensational QB Maruice Moore this Everman team struggled to find itself early losing to Kennedale and Stephenville but the turning point came in Week 9 against Waxahachie when Everman trailed 16-0 at the end of the 1st quarter, Moore took that game over and eventually led Everman to a comeback 33-32 win. The next week Everman won the district title with a 55-0 blowout win over Midlothian and then won their first two playoff games 48-0 over Brownwood and 36-14 over Lancaster. In the Regional Semi-Finals the Bulldogs took on unbeaten Lewisville Hebron and the Bulldogs trailing 12-8 in the second quarter lost QB Maurice Moore to an injury but they stayed right in the game and trailing 26-23 in the 4th quarter Moore heroically came back into the game and led Everman on a last ditch drive however he was picked off in the end zone with less than a minute left and the Bulldogs hopes for a 4A title ended.

4. 1984 (10-1) Class 4A District Champions: This was the first Everman team to win a district title since 1962. After getting off to an 8-0 start the Bulldogs faced perennial power Brownwood Week 9 in Brownwood, the Lions at the time were the #5 ranked team in the state. Trailing 15-14 late in the game the ground oriented Bulldogs broke tendency and hit a huge 53 yard pass to get the Dawgs in position to get the winning TD and win 20-15. The next week in front of a standing room only crowd at Marr Stadium Everman faced 9-0 and number 8 ranked Cleburne team and the Bulldogs won a war 14-10 but the win was costly as their star RB who had over 1600 yards was injured in the game and would miss the Bulldogs playoff game against Brewer and it took a last second FG for the Bears to beat Everman 15-14.

5. 2000 (12-2) Class 3A Div. 1 State Semi-Finalists: This was a young Everman team that was a bit overrated heading into the season and they struggled early on..the Bulldogs got it going late and headed into their Regional Final game facing 12-0 Daingerfield...Everman would dominate the favored Tigers throughout in a 34-8 win..the next week the Bulldogs would face another set of Bulldogs from Abilene Wylie and in a thriller the Wylie Bulldogs would knock off EHS 20-13.

Well, we dont have the kind of tradition most of you schools do. But, we had a good team about 4 years ago....

2002:13-3 DII State Champs After a rough start to the season, we played in an incredibly loaded district with DI finalist Burnet, Liberty Hill, Wimberley, Llano. We went to playoffs on the last play of the last district game against Llano. We peaked at the right time, beating a La Vernia team 49-0 in the first playoff game. Went on to beat undefeated Midland Greenwood in the title game that went into multiple overtimes, won by a field goal. Amazing team full of team chemistry. A bunch of guys that just loved playing the game together.

Cameron Yoe....that I can think of

1981 - Only year to win state title, beat Gilmer 27-3 @ Baylor's Floyd Casey Stadium

2000 - Dominated for most of the year, starting RB Ed Lewis was lost to a broken leg during 3rd round game vs. Sweeny, ended up losing regional final by an extra point to Marlin @ Kyle Field

1996 - Don't remember too much about the team except that they lost in quarterfinals to Coldspring @ Kyle Field

2005 - Best record to not win the state title, lost WR/K/P/ATH Derek Evans in 2nd round to broken ankle vs. Robinson, went on to Regional finals and lost to eventual state runner up Hutto @ Round Rock ISD Stadium

2004 - Lost in 3rd round to eventual state runner up Jasper @ Bowers Stadium in Hunstville

I'm sure the earlier Cameron teams like back in the 70's & 80's were good, just wasn't born to remember them
