WACO – The Copperas Cove Bulldawgs came into the contest with the mission of trying to establish the passing game and, for all intents and purposes, their mission was complete after two quarters of play.

Robert Griffin led the Dawgs to a 31-0 halftime lead over Waco University, as he completed nine of 14 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns while receiving plenty of time to throw the ball throughout the half.

Griffin continued his torrid pace through the second half, finishing the night with 221 yards passing and two touchdowns which helped the Dawgs defeat University, in convincing fashion, 57-0 Friday night at Waco ISD Stadium.

"Robert continues to get better and better, gaining more confidence along the way," Copperas Cove coach Jack Welch said. "Coach Tracy Welch has been working on his technique and tonight his passes were getting to his receivers."

The evening did not start out on a positive mark for the Bulldawgs as Griffin connected with Logan Brock on his first pass of the game and Brock fumbled at the Cove 45-yard line, with University recovering the ball.

Copperas Cove (6-1 overall, 2-0 District 16-4A) did not panic, though, and received a pick-me-up when the defense recovered a Randy Price fumble just two plays later.

The Dawgs used the momentum-changer to their favor, driving the ball 48 yards on five plays and ending in a Billy Abreu 1-yard touchdown run with 7:21 remaining in the first quarter.

Waco University (1-6, 0-2) continued to make the Bulldawg defense work, driving the ball 47 yards on 10 plays, but the drive stalled at the Cove 37-yard line and the Trojans were forced to punt.

After receiving the ball on their own 10-yard-line, the Dawgs drove 90 yards on nine plays, aided by a 25-yard pass from Griffin to Brock.

Troy Vital then capped the drive as he scored his first touchdown of the season just two plays into the second quarter.

The Trojans could muster little defense once again and, after a 47-yard punt, Griffin connected with Donnell Greer for a 60-yard touchdown pass and the rout was on.

Griffin later added a 42-yard touchdown pass to Rashad Hawk and Kyle Mathews connected on a 31-yard field goal to conclude the scoring in the first half.

The balanced offensive attack, which mustered two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns, was exactly what Welch and the rest of the Bulldawg staff had hoped to find in this district game.

"One of the things that we wanted to do coming into the game was to be more balanced," Welch said. "They (University) made us be more balanced by putting all of the men in the box tonight and we executed tonight."

Mario Goins kept things rolling for the Bulldawgs as he returned the second-half kickoff 59 yards and then 15 yards was added to the return on the first of several personal fouls against the Trojans in the second half.

Jerrard Millsap scored three plays into the first drive on a 3-yard touchdown run. After that series Millsap was given the rest of the evening off. He finished with 54 yards on eight carries.

University's greatest scoring opportunity came after a roughing-the-passer penalty gave the Trojans another first down midway through the third quarter. Marquise Hughes led a drive that pushed the ball to the Bulldawg 2-yard line, where Goins caught him from behind on a touchdown-saving tackle.

The floodgates opened from there as Cove concluded the game with 19 fourth-quarter points, beginning with Vital's second touchdown run of the night from 24 yards out.

Dujuan Prater scored on a 3-yard touchdown run after Devin Perry collected a Hughes fumble, on which Hughes left the game with an apparent knee injury. Hughes had 102 yards rushing on 17 carries before the injury.

After a Jerome Woods sack of Price forced a safety, Mathews capped the scoring with a 32-yard field goal.

"Overall, our kids didn't worry about the scoreboard tonight and played real well. We were able to get our 2's and 3's in there and they played exceptional as well," Welch said. "I feel for Coach Coleman because the score was not indicative of the game tonight.

"They were trying to run the ball but started turning the ball over and you can't do that against good teams like us."

Copperas Cove returns to action Friday night against Hewitt Midway at Bulldawg Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
