Lions revert to old habits in 20-3 loss to Forney
By DAVID CLAYBOURN
Greenville Herald-Banner Staff

FORNEY — Last week the Greenville Lions turned in their best outing of the 2006 football season to whip Richardson Pearce 27-10.

But the Lions reverted back to some old habits on Friday night at City Bank Stadium in Forney where they lost 20-3 to the Forney Jackrabbits.

The Lions beat themselves once again, losing three turnovers, committing 12 penalties for 99 yards and losing some big yardage and momentum on a couple of bad snaps from center out of shotgun formation.

The loss knocked the 2-5 Lions out of a tie for third place in District 10-4A. Greenville is now 2-2 in district play while Forney improved its season record to 4-3 and district mark to 3-1 with a victory on homecoming.

Forney took the opening possession and ran the ball right down the Lions' throats. Running back Andre Derosier carried four straight times for 70 yards, including bursts of 39 and 21 yards before scoring on a 5-yard run. Thomas Moreland's kick gave the Jackrabbits a 7-0 lead with 10:22 still left in the opening quarter.

Greenville cut the margin to 7-3 with a drive from its 23 to the Forney 15. Quarterback Casey Ludford picked up 28 yards on one run after freezing the Forney defense with a fake handoff. But the drive stalled at the Forney 15 and the Lions had to settle for Andrew Tarrant's 33-yard field goal with 1:33 left in the first period. It was Tarrant's sixth field goal of the season and would be the Lions’ only points of the game.

Josh Hughs of Forney answered Greenville's field goal with a 90-yard kickoff return to the Lion seven. Raymond Payton saved a touchdown with his tackle. Greenville's defense, led by tackle Mark Mosby and linebacker Nick Spigner, dug in and forced Forney to settle for Moreland's 23-yard field goal that made it 10-3 with 11:12 remaining in the second quarter.

Greenville cornerback Curtis Johnson tried to set the Lions up for another score with an interception and a 36-yard return to the Forney 42. The Lions got backed up 10 yards because of an illegal block on the interception return. After Ludford was sacked for a 7-yard loss, the Greenville quarterback picked up 11 yards on a keeper and five yards with a pass from Eric Johnson back to Ludford.

But the Lions self-destructed at the Forney 21, first drawing a 5-yard illegal procedure penalty and then losing 14 yards on a bad snap from center. Greenville lined up to punt but faked it with Ludford, in at the blocking back position, trying to throw to Raymond Payton. Though Ludford's pass landed incomplete, Forney was called for defensive holding, giving the Lions an automatic first down at the Forney 23.

Ludford kept the Lions rolling with a 9-yard run to the Forney 14, but that was as close as the Lions could get. The Lions sent Tarrant back out for a 32-yard field goal attempt but though he made the kick, the Lions were flagged for illegal motion. Tarrant then missed a 37-yard attempt as Forney clung to a 10-3 halftime lead.

After Alexandra Rivera was crowned as Forney’s homecoming queen at halftime, the Lions got off to a rough start in the third quarter with a fumble on their first possession that was recovered by Forney’s Kenneth Parker at the Lion 27. Forney couldn’t move against the Greenville defense and Moreland’s 50-yard field goal attempt landed short and wide to the left.

Forney won a field position battle in the third quarter to get close enough for Moreland to try a 47-yard field goal with 2:12 left in the third quarter but the Lions blocked it.

Three plays later, Forney’s Chad Laury picked off a Greenville pass and raced 40 yards for a touchdown with 1:50 left in the third period. Moreland’s kick made it 17-3.

Moreland missed a 38-yard field goal try to the right early in the fourth quarter but hit on a 26-yarder with 12.4 seconds left after the Lions failed to convert a fourth-and-18 play from their 8-yard line on the previous play.

Neither team mustered much offense as Forney finished with a 133-121 advantage in total yards.
