With so much hype surrounding this year's edition of the Battle of the Bay, both teams brought their best game.

Or so it seemed.

The Aransas Pass Panthers (3-3, 0-1) stormed the field and proved for the first 12 minutes of the contest that they could hang with the highly-favored Ingleside Mustangs (5-1, 1-0).

Before a full house at Mustang Stadium, Ingleside fans were silenced for the most part as the game got underway, but the Mustangs found their rhythm before the end of the first half and rolled to a 38-12 district opener victory.

Three Aransas Pass interceptions early in the contest allowed the Panthers to cut several Mustang offensive drives short, with one giving the visitors the opportunity to put the first points on the board Friday night.

With just under three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Ingleside began their third series, but when facing 3rd-and-13 at midfield, the Mustangs needed a conversion to keep their drive alive.

But the tides turned yet again for AP as Charles Davila picked off R.J. Endlsey's pass and returned the ball 48 yards to put the visiting Panthers up 6-0 with 1:14 left in the first quarter.

With the Mustangs desperate to tie or take the lead, the AP defense managed to pick off yet another Ingleside pass. This time, Richard Lockhart got his hands on a Josh Coffield pass intended for Joel Johnson near the 30-yard line.

The Panthers began the drive on their own 31 and Newman eventually advanced the ball on a keeper to sustain the series near midfield, picking up another first down.

Four plays later, the Mustangs gave the Panthers a taste of what they had been experiencing on their last two possessions, when Jesse Martinez intercepted AP quarterback Jarrod Newman's pass, which was intended for Tim Robles.

The possession didn't last long as Martinez fumbled, and then recovered by AP's Jacolby Williams, but was let loose again, but Martinez eventually got his hands on the ball before it was called dead.

With Ingleside deep in their own territory, they were able to put together a five-play, 77-yard series capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass to Zach Adams and take the lead after a successful PAT by Matt Rodriguez. The Mustangs held a 7-6 lead with 7:08 left in the opening quarter.

After that, the momentum seemed to dissipate for the Panthers as they were unable to stop the Ingleside air attack and overcome several key turnovers.

On the Panthers' next possession, Green Hill was stripped of the ball by Johnson, giving the Mustangs good field position at the 43-yard line. Coffield was then able to connect with Martinez on a 51-yard TD pass with 4:09 left in the half to extend the Ingleside lead to eight.

Ingleside forced the Panthers to punt after a faulty five-play series, and on their next series were able to build their lead yet again, but this time on a field goal off the foot of Rodriguez from 34 yards out with 46 seconds left in the first half.

At the break, the Mustangs enjoyed a 17-6 lead but were stunned that they hadn't built a larger advantage after averaging 43 points per outing.

But even more bewildered were the Panthers who seemed to deflate after taking control early in the game.

Ingleside opened the second half by kicking off to the Panthers, but a slow start had both teams trade punts before the Mustangs put together a three-play series capped by a 2-yard run across the goal line by Adams with 5:12 left to play in the third period. Rodriguez' kick was good and extended the Ingleside lead 24-6.

Again, the two teams traded punts with the Mustang defense allowing very little gain on the Panthers' next two possessions, but AP managed to find the end zone one last time from 23 yards out when Markus Rocke scored to cut the Ingleside lead in half with 10:48 remaining in the game.

Even though the Mustangs held the lead, it wasn't enough for comfort. After forcing the Panthers to punt from their own 24 yard line, Ingleside regained possession and it didn't take long before the scoreboard lit up again.

This time, Rodriguez broke free for a 69-yard dash to score again for the Mustangs. He also put up the PAT to give Ingleside a 31-12 advantage with 4:07 left in the fourth.

In desperation to score again, the Panthers attempted to convert on fourth down, but Robles was sacked for a 10-yard loss, giving Ingleside possession at the AP 11 yard line.

On 2nd-and-goal, Endsley who returned to the field, connected with Scott Holder on a 12-yard pass to complete the game's scoring at 38-12.

Even though the ‘Stangs moved to 5-1 after a slow start, Head Coach Graig Hesseltine said his team may have had the jitters due to the hype surrounding the big rivalry. “I felt we started a little bit nervous but that was expected being our first district game. Once we stopped making mistakes on offense, we got things rolling and played well for the last three quarters.”

Hesseltine's solid defense held the Panthers to 251 total yards, while the Mustangs picked up 174 on the ground and 207 through the air.

Looking ahead to the Mathis Pirates, Hesseltine says they're a good team and upset West Oso last Friday.

“They (Mathis) run the nasty slot offense and have a good running game. Defensively, they'll try to confuse us and we'll have to read them well. We should do fine if we do that,” Hesseltine said.

"At the break, the Mustangs enjoyed a 17-6 lead but were stunned that they hadn't built a larger advantage after averaging 43 points per outing."

After the way the Mustangs played the first Qtr it wasn't that suprising.
