DENTON--Denton did everything but win the game against. After Denison failed to convert on two-point conversion after a touchdown with under a minute to go, the Denton sideline celebrated a win that would have put them back in the playoff hunt.

But Denison recovered the ensuing onside kick and quarterback Stanley Morrison moved his offense enough to set up a Chase Kaufman 46-yard field goal with just 15 seconds left, capping a monster fourth-quarter comeback to give Denison a 37-35 win over Denton on Thursday night at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.

“It’s pretty hard to swallow right now,” said Denton head coach Randy Patzkowski, who sat still and silent outside the C.H. Collins field house well after fans and players had left the stadium. “They battled. They fought so hard. I love these kids to death. I’m so proud of them. We’re trying to get over the hump, we’re trying to turn the corner in this program. This is the type of game right here that helps you do that. It’s just a shame.”

Denton (3-5, 1-3) had control of the game going into the fourth quarter after taking a 28-14 lead into halftime. After containing electric Denison quarterback Stanley Morrison for much of the game, Denton allowed the quarterback to burst for a 60-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28.

Denton took the lead three plays later on a 1-yard Reagan Wood touchdown run, but Morrison threw a 13-yard touchdown to Kevin Holzbog with under a minute to go. Denison elected to try for the two-point conversion, but Morrison seemingly fumbled the game away after dropping the snap and falling on the 1-yard line, leaving Denton with a 1-point lead.

But Denison’s Devin Jackson recovered the ensuing onside kick, Morrison got Denison within kicker Chase Kaufman’s range, and the junior nailed a 46-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in the game.

“Even after we stop them and they miss the two-point conversion, we still gotta play,” Patzkowski said. “There was still a minute left. They did a perfect onside. Give them credit. It was a heck of a game. We came on the short end of it.”

A career performance from Denton quarterback Reagan Wood wasn’t enough to lift Denton to a win. Wood threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to 158 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown.

Wood threw touchdown passes of 61 and 59 yards in the first quarter to receiver Walter Coleman, who also had a career game with seven receptions, 251 yards and three touchdowns. Denton jumped out to a 20-0 first quarter lead as the Denton offense looked unstoppable and Morrison looked lost in the backfield.

But the second quarter wasn’t as kind to Denton. Denison got on the board early in the quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Curly Jackson, who diced Denton all night to the tune of 178 yards and two touchdowns, including a 91-yard score to get Denison going in the third quarter.

Two Denton personal fouls gave Denison enough field position to close Denton’s lead to six with a little over two minutes left in the first half, but it still looked like Denton's night after Wood threw a 29-yard strike through a plethora of Denison defenders to Coleman to give Denton a 28-14 halftime lead.

But Denton would score only one more time in the game, and Morrison’s playmaking ability gave Denison the opportunity to get back in the game in the second half.

“We can learn a lot from this game,” Patzkowski said. “They made the plays they needed to make in the second half and we didn’t make enough of them. No. 11 [Morrison] hurt us like I was worried about all night. We contained him for the most part, but then he had a couple of big runs in the second half that just killed us.”
