While the band was out there finishing their show...Liberty Hill football players were behind us throwing footballs. What if they were to hit the band. There was still 3 minutes left of halftime..COULDN'T YALL WAIT to let the finish their show..We thought that was really rude, and i know that i am not the ONLY person to think so. I have had many people say to me that was really RUDE of them to do that.

May i also add that it was the 8th graders on the field with the high school band having their turn in the spot light. People stopped watching how wonderful the 8th grade band was to the DISRESPECT football players. Im sorry to say but i really am disappointed those guys did that. What if yall were the ones in the 8th grade band and had football players behind yall doing that? Yall wouldn't be to happy either.

Well.... It is a football game.

I have seen your band and thought it was the best band show all year.

I am sure the LH players meant no disrespect to your band. But it was cold and they needed to warm up to get ready to play the second half for a district championship. Don't take it so personal.

Burnetdawg06, while it was pretty unusual for them to do that, I think you have to understand that they had a whole lot more on their minds than half time shows, if you noticed their cheer leaders were standing on the end of the field with their big sign for the team to run through. The team finished warming up and went straight to their side line and didnt make a big entrance by running through the sign. Their cheerleaders dropped the sign and ran on over to their side when they realized what was happening. I don't think any of this had anything to do with LH being rude to the Burnet band, I think they knew by the half that they had very little chance of winning the game. It has to be hard for a team to be undefeated all season to realize early in a game that they were up against a team that they really might not be able to beat. I just hope we don't have the same experiance this year. I am proud of the LH team for keeping a hard fight up till the end. They are definately a team for their community to be proud.

They did play a great and exciting game, and I personally think they were a good test for our defense, especially with the dawgs getting ready for playoffs. I hope Liberty Hill does extremely will in division 2. I'll be rooting them on!!

Half time is designated for the school to have 25 minutes to do something, not to be interrupted by the football players tossing the ball around. You realize that burnet football players weren't on the field, maybe its b/c they have a little more respect for the band than liberty hill does.

why do you want to fuss lepfan? i just said that option was there, the halftime was not yet over. the band was still on the field.it just didnt seem right had they waited the boys could have ran thru their sign while the band exits the field .

I have to admit, and I was IN the band in High School...but I don't watch the band's show...I hated the ugly uniforms and those early morning practices....the only thing I liked were the bus trips...we had a blast! No disrespect, but I think the only fans that really get into the half time show, are the parents of the band members.
And, so they should. :D Me..I head to the munchie stand and get in some good
"gobbling". :D

top priorities at high school football games...

1. The teams and game itself
2. Perfect Weather
3. Good Food at the Concession Stand
4. Easy access parking
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10. The band's half time performance

WHY would i be mad?

I never said i was MAD. I was just disappointed they did that. Like bigdogsbulldogmom said, it was the SENIORS last night to play a home game a real game, and it was the 8th graders first time to ever do something like that. Its a big deal to those people, why cant people be alittle more respectful to those people? How would they have liked it if they were in the middle of a game and started running around like a freaking crazy person? i dont think they would have been to happy with me interrupting their IMPORTANT moment.

does it not bother anyone when the band walks around to the sidelines behind the team to get ready for half time....hmmmm, I think they should maybe wait until the buzzer goes off before they get out of the stands to go to the field...I think that may be distracting to the team,,,and what if one of those tuba players were to trip and hit one of the football players...well, I really think that would be a shame...not to mention if one of those drumsticks were to accidently fly out of the hands of one of the drummers why that could put a eye out on one of the coaches, players, officials, chain gang, etc....what should we do about that????

20dawgz05
11-09-2003, 12:42 AM
i agree we work hard and we do all that crap (the band) but we have our time to shine at UIL CONTEST...the football players work more than we do and they have their time to shine on friday or saterday nights....i dont like bein disrespected but i dont think throwing a football is bein disrespectfull ecspecialy since it was behind us!!!......if they were like streeking down the 50 and like throwing stuff AT US then yes i would have to jump the side line but its not a big deal!!!

(never said the tripped up tuba player would "take out the player" but, you know how big those tubas are and it takes a "big 'ol boy" (as roy d. mercer would say) to tote one of those around. FUNNY, no what would have been funny would have been a stray football flying on field hitting the twirler or flute player....LOL...I just love double standards that some have...

ok to be honest nothing against burnet but i was so cold and i was looking for something to laugh about that I wanted someone to hit a band memeber so i could have something to laugh about and not worry about the cold. but on a serious note hey Lh had some adjustments to make and they needed to get warmed up before the second half started. It wasnt really rude in my opinion, i'm sorry if you felt like it was wrong but they had a game they needed to win and they needed to get some stuff done before the second half started. Like jason said it wasnt a concert it was a football game they had to be ready.

LH WAS NOT BEING RUDE, THEY WERE TRYING TO TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS UNDER EXTREEM PRESSURE. NO MORE WHINNING ABOUT THE BAND, PLEASEEEE! IF YOU WANT TO "PUT YOUR SELF IN SOME ONES SHOES" PUT YOURSELF IN THE SHOES OF THOSE LH FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND COACHES WHO WHERE ABOUT TO SEE THEIR PERFECT SEASON COME TO AN END. AND SINCE WERE BEING SO SENSITIVE PUT YOURSELF IN THE SHOES OF THEIR PARENTS! THEY WERE TRYING TO DO ANYTHING THEY COULD DO TO GET AN EDGE. NUFF SAID

well, all i'll say is that the teamS have a right to come out and warm up before the second half - in fact, as a TASO official myself i'd expect them to be READY TO PLAY when halftime was over. READY TO PLAY.

so there, interpret that how you like ...

In the words of a band member I know "Gees Louise". I was watching the half time show I didn't even notice the LH players coming on to the field. Did anyone get hit by a football or knocked over? All I saw was the kids on the field playing there best seniors and 8th grade included. I bet if you took a poll of all the people there know one noticed really? Besides I would like to get creamed by a cute football player.

There was absolutely no disrespect meant toward the Burnet band - the discrespect would have come IF our players had run through the cheerleaders sign & caused our fans to stand up and cheer in the middle of the band's performance. The halftime talk with the coach was over; it was cold; we were behind (quite a bit if you remember the score at half); and our players ALWAYS warm up the last minute or so before halftime is over, including at home. I have not heard LH band members or band parents complain about the football players being on the football field. I support all bands and watch the halftime shows, except when I help in the concession stand, even though my children choose football over band. Band members/parents, please do not take our players warming up as disrespect; they certainly had other things on their minds, like how to get back into the ballgame and not allow your team to mop the field with them.

Bandera YaYa:
I have to admit, and I was IN the band in High School...but I don't watch the band's show...I hated the ugly uniforms and those early morning practices....the only thing I liked were the bus trips...we had a blast! No disrespect, but I think the only fans that really get into the half time show, are the parents of the band members.
And, so they should. :D Me..I head to the munchie stand and get in some good
"gobbling". :D Like Bandera Ya-Ya, I was in the band, but I can recognize that although the band adds a great deal to the atmosphere, the "event" is the football game.

The team members, where-ever they are from need to do what they feel is necessary to compete. I am certain no disrespect was intended.

i could see it being a problem if the football players were disturbing the band by running routes through the trumpet section...but that didnt happen
get over it
the band gets their own individual competitions
the football players have to share their competitions with the band...and the band doesnt even compete...essentially they are dress-rehearsing for their next competition
at a FOOTBALL game, FOOTBALL is important, not the band practicing

You know, I can understand how people would pay $5 to see the team play. You say that you didn't come to see the band, so why did you watch them? There were definately PLENTY of concessions at the Burnet game, no one MADE you stay and watch. But, you know, it is just sheer respect. You people say that you came to see foorball, not band, so in essence you are saying that you came to watch the Liberty Hill Foot Ball playeres WARM UP during our performance? If so, I don't understand why you even show for something like that. The band/football relationship in Burnet is one like hardly any others I have seen. The coeaches and team members come and ask the director if he will play a certain song DURING the game. You know, if people have such a problem with the band and others being offended by the opposing teams warm up timing, then why don't you don't you mention MORE OFTEN about when teams come into the stdium and jump in the middle of the field? This was a post that should have never been started. People have said that the band is only there for practice for the next week, well, doesn't the same go for the football team? I know it does for ours! There are 25 min. designated for half-time festivities that include the concession stand AND the band. It is your choice of which one you would like to do more. If you notice our stands, they stay pretty full throughout. Some people say that the football guys dont care about the Band anyways...well, if that is so, why do ours collect up in FRONT of the band at the end of every game. They expect us to bring the band just like we expect them to bring the team. It is mutual. Think about it.

Why does this post have over 100 replies?? Geez...they weren't being disrespectful. There wouldn't be a game if it wasn't for football. They needed to warm up. It was cold, and they realized their record was in trouble. They have every right to get on that field and warm up. They weren't interfering with the show. Heck, I didn't even notice they were even on the feild til a friend pointed it out.

Okay...good night!

BTW-I fully support the band and everything, BUT IT IS NOT A BID DEAL! GET OVER IT AND FOCUS ON SUPPORTING THE DAWGS ON THEIR WAY TO STATE!! :o

I was talking to all the posters on this particular topic as an entire body. No on in particualar. I know they intended no harm or disrespect by getting on the field. I would have prefered they hadn't done it while we were performing but they did what they needed to. But, I don't see what the extra two min. were going to do for them. I mean, there was a track behind us they could have trown the ball or warmed up on. Heck, the could have done it while their band was marching. BUT, you know, we all have different opinions and view points...I mean look at how many opinions have been posted thus far....120+!

Let me see if I understand this correctly....the band-or band parent-is upset that football players were warming up on the football field during halftime?! THIS IS FOOTBALL!!! Of course the FOOTBALL players are warming up on the FOOTBALL field!

I am starting to believe that band members and cheerleaders are forgetting that they are there to support the FOOTBALL team. They are not the main attraction and are rarely considered when most fans walk through the gate (other than the parents of band/cheerleaders specifically). I love to hear the band blasting away after a big play or score and I like to hear them through the whole game. But if they quit and walked out-I would still be there for the game. I like to see cheerleaders actually cheering for big plays and scores. If they were not there I would notice, but I would still be there for the game.

This would have been a great topic, Im sure on a band site. (Maybe its time that you start one.) I am proud of our band and usualy choose to watch the bands at half time rather than fight the crowds, but I don't come on 3A down low football site to see band members draw the kind of flack that they leave themselves open for with coments like the ones posted here.

they should limit each band to 10 minutes so there's 5 minutes of peace and quiet and fans dont have to listen to the noise of the band and so they can eat their sausage-on-a-stick's in peace....

why do we watch the band?
just maybe the reason why the people stay in the stands is b/c thats where they were in the first place...in the stands watching FOOTBALL
maybe they werent hungry so they didnt get up and leave...maybe they can TOLERATE the band enough to not leave while they are playing
if the concessions were free...im sure there would be hardly any people in the stands
and i dont know how they do it in burnet...its working though...
but here in Sinton--we call competing and practicing two different things
we also take one game at a time
is the band competing at a football game?
no
is the football team competing at a football game?
yes
warming up can prevent injuries...and yes 2 minutes does make a difference
if 2 minutes isnt that much...then maybe the band can get off the field 2 minutes sooner...
since, you know...2 minutes doesnt matter
and this post was directed at burnetbandrules to clear up any confusion

The football players are out to play a dificult game and need to warm up. Yes the band is part of the team but the band doesn't work hard to earn a championship title like the football players do.
The band needs to understand that band is a year long event, Footaball only last half a semester or less. True that its a football game not a concert. The band won't march if there no football team to march for.

The Burnet Band has advanced to the State Marching Contest the last three times in a row, and has earned UIL sweepstakes for at least the last 12 years in a row, so we probably know a thing or two about championships.
Comparing football competitions to band competitions is like comparing apples and oranges; only an idiot would do that! But our band does support our football team, just like they support the band and drill team! That's what makes Burnet unstoppable right now!
As for what the fans stick around for in Burnet; they support winners, both during the game and at halftime. Burnet is the greatest place to be in Texas right now, because our town gets it; they support EVERY STUDENT in EVERY ORGANIZATION on campus! If it's not like that in your town, you just don't get it!!

Guess it's not like that where you are, or you'd know what we're talkin' about here in Burnet! When it clicks, EVERYONE IN THE SCHOOL CAN BE SUCCESSFUL. That's what's happenin' here!its exactly like that in Forney and it has been the last ten years...WE'RE not one year wonders like Burnet is...you dont think the football team would play the same if the band stayed home? they'd prolly play better not having the noise on the field...

Maybe that's the excuse you so-called football experts in Forney use for going to the concession stand at halftime. It's obvious you've never been to a Burnet game, Jason. Like I said, Burnet fans appreciate and applaud everything associated with the activities on Friday nights; football, band, drill team, cheerleaders... Oh yeah; and we also have the best concession stands in the state! That's why Burnet is successful at everything it does! We're a real class act. Get a clue! i have been to a Burnet game thank you very much...you can ask about 5 people on here that saw me there...and i was NOT impressed with the band, they were average....

This is one of the funniest (and longest) subjects that's been discussed in a while. All the talk about rude football players, angry band members and band parents, dangerous band instruments and concessions stands is great.

What bothers me is the way so many people use "....." between comments to make really long run-on sentences. For pete's sake, make complete sentences and use correct punctuation marks. That is, unless you just didn't learn it in school. It's so much more enjoyable for those of us trying to read it.

How's that for changing the subject? :D

j/k

Actually...it's first and foremost a school function, designed to get as many students and parents and the whole town involved in the event. The football game is the "hook" to get people to come. It's about developing character. We shouldnt forget this...its about the kids.

BUT...

It doesnt sound like there was disrepect intended. I have seen this many times, and I doubt there was intentional dissing. But I do know there is lots of disrespect for the band and the cheerleaders at most games I have seen...they work their tails off for little or no acknowledgement. Most people just blow them off.

A clap now and then...or a "way to go" or a "hey you guys rocked" comment on your way to the bathroom or concession stand goes a long way towards giving kids a feeling of acceptance and accomplishment.

i am guilty of not doing enough to encourage these kids. I bet most here are too. I will try to improve on this.

Heck no I didn't look at the date. I figured since it was near the top of the latest threads, and it was from somone with BHS in their name, it had to be someone from Brownwood High School. Thank goodness it's from another BHS.

As far as getting tougher football players, Maybe your Band needs tougher 8th graders.

I think they ought to make the bands play before the game even starts. Half time is way too long anyway. They need a halftime as short as the pros do.

I think band at halftime would be alot more enjoyable and entertaining if both bands were on the field at the same time and each band had to play while the other band was trying to take their instruments away from them.:D

Unless you're BR or LaMarque.

So true! I remember that scene and it was pretty funny.

I kid though about DISD halftime shows. They're fun most of the time. DISD bands are pretty entertaining. I'll hang around to listen to our band mainly because I respect the job Mr. Sanders is able to do with what he has. He's pulled kids out of the hall before and taught kids that can't read a lick of sheet music how to play an instrument in a very short amount of time. I really don't know how he does it.

Last week we did just what the DMN writer said we'd do. We lost the game to Lincoln, BUT we won the most entertaining halftime show in the state (Insert your A&M reference...lol)! I know it's not much but for a band that plays almost completely by ear it's something!

The only instance I can think of where a halftime went somewhat wrong was the A. Maceo game in 2006. Their band had a good halftime show and for some reason their Falcon mascot decides to stand right on the 50 and start taunting our fans! Nevermind that we were up 39-7, that didn't deter him from standing there for a few minutes making some strange gestures in our direction...lol.

while it WAS a football game...football is a a UIL sanctioned extracurricular activity JUST LIKE BAND...what, is football more important than a group of kids who might be performing for their parents that might not get to make it to watch them that often

i was never in band...and i played football....but the older i get, the more i realize that so many ppl think that highschool football players rule the school...sorry, but those band kids have every right to those measly few minutes during halftime as the players do to the rest of the game

It has been a while since I have seen anyone banned for just ONE thing....it's usually cumulative until we are pretty much left no choice!!!
