Can someone explain to me what it means when the defense stunts?

for example a nose tackle and the right tackle -- the NT angles to the right and the tackle hesitates slightly and lets the NT go in front then rushed where the NT was -- they sort of make an X instead of rushing straight aheadd -- its supposed to confuse the offensive lineman --------- thats very simplistic but you get the idea

So is a stunt related to a blitz or are the two sepearte?

It is generally when a specific defensive player switches responsibilities with another position, say for example a defensive end stunts through the B gap and the OLB takes fill out the outside. It's just a planned role switch between defensive players.

Yea, basically, BBDE hit it right on the nose. the nose goes B gap and the tackle goes A, etc. can be any of the front 7 switching gaps to throw off the line

So would there be a particular offensive formation it would be more beneficial to stunt against?

I like stunting tackle under nose against a no tight end formation, spreads the line out and leaves holes for the Lb to get into, but its all a matter of preference

Doomsday Defense use to run stunts to perfection.

Stunt technically involves the front 7 (DL & LBS) doing games up front as explained earlier (twists, pinch, etc.).

Blitz means bringing others (DBs) more than just the front 7 after the qb or into the backfield (can run blitz too, not just on passing downs)

DOG refers to blitzes & attach all kinds of names on them (zone dogs, blue, red, etc.)

Stemming involves movement up & down the line before the ball is snapped by the DL to create confusion (reducing down, etc.)

A gaps between C & G
B gaps between G & T
C gaps outside the T

**most times the term BLITZ is all inclusive though on tv to make it easier on viewers ("came with a blitz")
