Do the 4a teams in the DFW area always play on Thursday night? Is this due to crowd problems, gang fights and such? Just wondering.

Just wondering. no, forneys district contains a few mesquite schools, and with several high schools in mesquite, and only 2 stadiums, some schools have to play on thursday nights - its the same way with disd, forney played dallas madison a few times on thursday nights...

its fairly common in towns with more than 3 high schools...it has nothing to do with gangs or violence...

fyi mesquite has:

north mesquite (5a),

Wes Mesq 19 - Forney 14

Missed a wide open TD with under a minute left. Our playcalling is horrendous.

Was 19-0 going into the half, I think there were 10 combined turnovers.

MESQUITE--The scheme called for outside linebacker Yomi Akintunde to settle into pass coverage.

But the West Mesquite senior said when he saw where the Forney tight end was lined up, he decided to rush the passer.

Good call.

Akintunde’s sack of Landon Hartwick on fourth and 16 from Forney’s 47 with 49 seconds to play – Akintunde’s third sack of the game - sealed West Mesquite’s 19-14 win at Memorial Stadium Thursday night. The last two play of Forney’s drive ended in sacks, with A.J. Shafer getting the other.

In improving to 5-1, 3-0 in District 10-4A, the area’s No. 8 team forced Forney (3-3, 2-1) into four turnovers, intercepting Hartwick three times.

Referring to his last sack, Akintunde said, “No one blocked me. I just ran as hard as I could and got to him. It felt real good. It’ll feel even better tomorrow.”

Two of Hartwick’s interceptions came from Jonathan McCray. His first set up his team’s first touchdown, a seven-yard reception by Chazz Virgil from Kendall Thomas that gave West Mesquite a 7-0 advantage less than two minutes into the game.

West Mesquite took a 13-0 lead with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter on William Thomas’ two-yard run. The two-play drive was set up when a West Mesquite punt touched a Forney player as he ran downfield to block. Brandon Robyler recovered on Forney’s 25-yard line.

Forney’s Peter Smith and Andre Derosier entered the game having combined for 700 yards rushing. But West Mesquite’s line was hard to penetrate, limiting Smith to 39 yards on 20 carries and Derosier 19 on six.

The game was sloppy at times as the two teams combined for six first-half turnovers.

“I would rather win ugly than lose pretty any day,” West Mesquite coach Mike Overton said.

West Mesquite’s running game took a hit when Larry Williams injured a knee midway through the first quarter. Williams, who has rushed for 100 yards three times this season, would not return.

A 24-yard touchdown pass from Hartwick to Austin Williams early in the fourth quarter cut West Mesquite’s lead to 19-14.

exciting game. I got there at halftime and forney was down 13-0. Then when West got the quick score to begin the second half I thought....uh oh! Forney fought back and the defense played great. Its good to see Forney compete.....
