The Cuero Gobblers completed a tough non-district schedule Friday producing an impressive 43-21 win over Bay City's Blackcats.

“I thought it was the best game our kids have played,” said Gobbler Head Coach Mark Reeve. “Our offense rushed for over 270 yards which is the best we've had all season and our defense shut down their run.”

“Our kids have shown they can step up and overcome anything that happens,” he said, referring to the number of players sidelined with injuries.

Seven different Gobblers scored points in the contest which saw Cuero up by as much as 43-14 at one point.

Cuero's first points were set up by a punt by Domingo Ruiz in the opening minutes of the game. His kick rolled dead at the Blackcat 4. The Gobbler defense allowed on four yards before Bay City had to kick.

Thanks to a 20-yard return by Corey Scott, Cuero had the ball at the Blackcat 33. Gobbler quarterback Kyle Noack found Ace Slone racing down the middle and hit him with a pass for a one-play touchdown by Cuero. Steven Bell's kick put the Gobblers on top 7-0.

The defensive combination of Stefon Hargrove, Kaeron Johnson, Patrick Bell and Colby Sturm resulted in three consecutive sacks and Bay City had to punt again.

Cuero took control from the Blackcat 30 and reached the 10 on runs by Fabian Olguin, Dason Jackson, Hargrove and a catch by Slone. But the drive stalled with Cuero trying to boot a field-goal. The kick was blocked.

Cuero wasted little time getting the ball back as the second quarter began. Olguin ticked-off 17 yards on a run to mid-field and pass to Scott moved Cuero to the Blackcat 42. Impressive runs by Hargrove and Noack put the Gobblers at the visitor's 2. Hargrove easily scored from there and Steven Bell's kick made it14-0

Brandon Hill's kick-off was returned to the Blackcat's 32. Three plays later and Bay City had lost ground. But a long pass was snagged by the Blackcats at the Gobbler endzone. However the catch was fumbled resulting in a touch-back.

Cuero's ball control offense launched a 10-play drive that covered 85 yards. It was highlighted by three passes to Scott, runs by Olguin, Hargrove and Noack. The touchdown came on a 31-yard pass play to Scott with 2:34 left in the first half. Bell's kick made it 21-0.

The Blackcats finally found success as time was running out for the first half. Four consecutive passes and Bay City moved 76 yards for their first points of the game to make it 21-7.

Despite fumbling on their opening drive in the third quarter, Cuero's second half was just as successful as the first.

Bay City capitalized on Cuero's fumble to score from the Gobbler 30. After forcing the Blackcats into a 4th-and-14 situation, a desperation pass was tipped by Cuero into the hands of Bay City to keep their hopes alive. Their touchdown narrowed the score to 21-14.

The remainder of the game belonged to Cuero. Bay City could not move on their next possession and a long-pass attempt was picked-off by Cuero's Ruiz and returned 43 yards for more Gobbler points. With the PAT Cuero was up 28-14.

Cuero's defense forced another Blackcat punt giving the Gobblers the ball at their own 30. A pass reception by Slone and a late-hit penalty on Bay City saw Cuero reach mid-field. Three consecutive runs by Olguin down the middle were too much for the Blackcats. His last was for 39 yards untouched into the end-zone. Bell's kick saw the scoreboard read 35-14.

Defensive efforts by Johnson, Ruiz, Scott, Josh Hernandez, Chris Styra, and Bo Pargmann forced Bay City to punt at Cuero's 39.

Starting at their own 8, Cuero relied on runs by Olguin and Hargrove and a pass to Scott to cover 92 yards. Hargrove powered over from the Blackcat 22 for the TD. An attempt to kick the extra point saw Bay City block the try. However, Jake Rangnow scooped up the loose ball and ran in for the two-point conversion. The score was 43-14 with four minutes left in the game.

The Blackcats earned their final points on their last drive of the night. Starting at their own 37, Bay City was able to move in spite of Gobbler defenders Lewis Lowe, Klayton Smith, Sam Stubblefield, Donald Winfield, and Steven Bell. A pass from 8-yards out hit its target to give Bay City its 21 points.

Ruby would have to be... it's all timed... Ruby has a 1 minute and 9 second lead (I believe) after the race at Worthington, Minnesota's "King Turkey Days"...

quote from Ruby's myspace:
