Bevo XIII the longest running mascot, in school history, died on Monday October 9.

He died less than 48 hours after the Longhorns defeated the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry.

He was born in February 1984 and became mascot in 1988.

His distinctive markings made him one of the most recognizable icons for the University of Texas.

A National Grand Champion show steer, his career as BEVO carried him to both coasts and even a Presidential Inauguration.

One of his most memorable moments happened during the 1999 Big XII Championship game against Nebraska.

While being escorted off the field, BEVO XIII left his "mark" on the Nebraska logo in the end zone.

His career inspired the Silver Spurs to create the BEVO Endowment, which benefits the Neighborhood Longhorns program, scholarships to the University of Texas, and the future care of all Bevos. The BEVO Endowment has raised nearly $2 million towards these charitable causes.

He will be memorialized in the new Silver Spur/BEVO Center, which will open the weekend of November 3.

he was pretty old so I can imagine the meat wasnt the highest quality. Probably better suited for hot dogs.

I remove my hat in honor of BEVO XIII. A truly sad day in Longhorn Land. Let's hope BEVO XIV is as great an icon as those before him.

Anyone know if BEVO XIV has been chosen yet? Or is this something they plan ahead for, and already have the next one ready.

maybe I'm wrong here but wasnt the original Bevo retired a year or two ago and given to a booster or something like that. I know I heard that. The Bevo now is not the original one from 88. Am i wrong here?

so the KVUE story stating that Bevo XIII started in 88 is inaccurate?

no. I believe that Bevo XIII started in 1988 and Bevo XIV started in 2005.

It's a longhorn breed, the meat would not be of good quality anyway.

Why must you be so negative Mr. I know everything about longhorn breeds? To eat that animal would be a small moral victory for an Ag such as myself. And we all know how much we love moral victories here.:D

Well, then you should inform Hut's Hamburgers....they do quite the business in longhorn burger sales. :p

That will be the only victory you claim against the longhorns this year.

Similar to that of Chik Fil A with the milk cows. They make horrible meat but they are a popular breed so therefore they are used :D
