A "warning" means there is a tornado on the ground. A "watch" means conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes and strong thunderstorms.

Tune NOAA weather radio if you have a receiver that will pick it up, or the weather channel if you have cable TV.

warning doesnt mean that a tornado is on the ground it simply means that a rotation has been spotted

No, "tornado warning" means a funnel has descended to the ground. A "funnel" descending from a wall cloud and remaining in the air is still called a "funnel".

Bull, sometimes tornado warnings are issued due to what the NWS sees on doppler radar. But traditionally, you are correct.

spivey, I am one of the weather spotters who goes out and confirms what the NWS is seeing on doppler radar and reports directly to the NWS via amateur radio. The NWS does not usually issue the warning unless there has been confirmation by a trained weather spotter or law enforcement/fire official. A "hook echo" is a stong indicator of the existence of a funnel or a tornado.

Not trying to be one of those "knows-it-all" guys, but I take storm spotting very seriously and do my best to try to inform the public with as much accurate info about tornadoes as I possibly can---it may save someone's life if they are ever in a tornado's path.

Tornado - A violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground and extending from the base of a thunderstorm. A condensation funnel does not need to reach to the ground for a tornado to be present; a debris cloud beneath a thunderstorm is all that is needed to confirm the presence of a tornado, even in the total absence of a condensation funnel.

*Funnel Cloud - A condensation funnel extending from the base of a towering cumulus or Cb, associated with a rotating column of air that is not in contact with the ground (and hence different from a tornado). A condensation funnel is a tornado, not a funnel cloud, if either a) it is in contact with the ground or b) a debris cloud or dust whirl is visible beneath it.

KLCH and KHGX issues Tornado Warnings all the time using this phrase:

"NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO. THIS TORNADO WAS LOCATED WEST OF SANTA FE...MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH."

There never WAS a confirmed tornado, it was just RADAR INDICATED.

This was taken from the KHGX Tornado WARNING issued TODAY, @2:07PM

I worked for the highway dept this summer and we had a spotter course. I think I'm certified now, but I never got a certificate.
