SFA knocks off defending Southland Conference Champion

Oct. 7, 2006

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks silenced the critics Saturday night with a 24-13 win over defending conference co-champion, Texas State in San Marcos. The victory bumps SFA to 1-5 on the season and more importantly 1-0 in conference play, while Texas State falls to 1-4 on the season.

The first half belonged to the Bobcats as they owned a 10-0 advantage heading into the locker room. Texas State also recorded a goal line stand with 30 second remaining in the half to take all the momentum into the intermission, or so it seemed.

It was the Lumberjacks, behind quarterback Danny Southall and running back Louie Runnels, that took control of the game in the second half. SFA finished the game with 367 yards of total offense, outscoring the home team, 24-3, in the final two quarters.

Southall finished the game 13-of-24 for 191 yards and a touchdown. He also led SFA with seven carries for 90 yards and a score. Southall's touchdown scamper was a 59-yard run which proved to be the difference in the game. Runnels recorded 15 carries for 84 yards and a score. He also caught three passes for 63 yards.

The Lumberjacks will now take a week off before facing McNeese State in Nacogdoches for homecoming. The game is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.

I told you that SFA would be a worthy opponent for UT. This would be a classic match especially since they have never met and knowing that Nacodoches is the oldest city in Texas. It would be awesome though if the game were there wouldn't it?
