MONAHANS -- Once the Monahans football team decided to stop hurting itself, the Loboes decided to take it out on Pecos in their District 1-3A opener Friday night.
Monahans went scoreless in the first and fourth quarters, but did plenty of damage in the middle two in rolling to a 52-0 victory over Pecos to make a major statement. The Loboes (4-1 overall, 1-0 in district) dominated so thoroughly on both sides of the ball that if the game had been a fight, it would have been stopped before the end of the third quarter.
Coach Mickey Owens couldn't have asked for any better a start to the district season, especially against a traditional rival such as Pecos (3-3, 1-1).
"(The players) prepared really well with the mental part of the game," Owens said. "We've always been ready physically, but this time we really worked on the mental side."
The Loboes had to show some mental toughness early. After a scoreless first quarter which featured turnovers on their first two possessions, the Loboes dominated in the second quarter when they scored all of their first-half points to take a 24-0 halftime lead.
Pecos got the early breaks, as the first Monahans possession ended when Xavier Tercero intercepted Kenny Almanza's first pass of the game at the Pecos 2-yard line to snuff out the first Monahans threat. Then after a three-and-out, Almanza fumbled the next snap and Mason Baeza recovered for Pecos near midfield.
"We moved the ball up and down the field early but we hurt ourselves a couple of times," Owens said. "Our kids were ready for this game from the beginning so I wasn't worried about that."
After Pecos failed to capitalize on either turnover, Monahans took over and didn't let up. On the second play of the second quarter, Sean Merrick kicked a 41-yard field goal to put the Loboes on the board.
On the next Monahans possession after a botched punt by Pecos where Luis Ortega had to go to his knees to field the snap, the Loboes faced a fourth-and-five from the Pecos 20. They went for it, and Almanza recorded his only first half completion with a short flip over the middle to Chris Bates, who took it to the end zone for an 11-0 lead.
It was the first of two touchdown catches in the first half for Bates, who also caught a 44-yard scoring pass from Steven Valles with 33 seconds remaining in the half to give the Loboes their halftime margin.
The Loboes played most of the game without a key component in their Wing-T attack. Running back Chris Roberson, who hurt his right hand in practice earlier in the week, left the game after carrying the ball just three times, but the rest of the offense didn't miss a beat.
While the Loboes completed only three passes all three went for touchdowns, indicating the ease with which they moved the ball, piling up 461 total yards.
"We're a running team from the start," Owens said. "I think our passing game's getting better and I'm getting more and more confident calling those play action passes."
Monahans had seven ball carriers get at least three carries, all of whom gained at least 20 yards. Rodriguez led the way with 121 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns, while Devon Fann had 80 yards on only four carries, including a 33-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
"It's just about picking up the slack," Rodriguez said. "Devon's a good running back too and he can do just as well. Our offense is all about running the ball. It can be little by little, then we can bust a big one."
As productive as the Loboes were offensively, they might have been even more impressive defensively. They limited Pecos to a paltry five first downs and 98 yards of total offense, as they held Ortega, the top runner for Pecos, to 49 yards on 24 carries.
