Question of the day

Q: Is this a big game for Colt McCoy's future as quarterback at Texas?

Since the Texas coaches like to compare McCoy to Major Applewhite, let's use that analogy. McCoy has started five games. In Applewhite's sixth game starting as a redshirt freshman, he went to Lincoln, Neb., and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college football at the time, He helped end the Cornhuskers' nation-leading, 47-game home winning streak in 1998.

Chip Brown: This is McCoy's sixth start Saturday. Against teams of comparable talent, McCoy needs to show he has the charisma to put his foot on the opponent's throat or lead a come-from-behind victory. Applewhite was special. We don't know if McCoy is special or simply an accurate passer against weaker teams. In the month of October, he will play OU, Nebraska and Texas Tech on the road. We'll know at the end of this month, if he's big-time or not.

If he struggles or if his arm strength is a concern (as it was against Iowa State on an intercepted out pattern) or if he lacks fire when the team is close or behind, you could see Jevan Snead getting his chance in November. Coaches already know Snead has arm strength, charisma and appears to be gaining on McCoy's knowledge of the offense. Snead is also a more aggressive runner and is completing 72.2 percent of his passes in mop-up duty (13 of 18).
