The only team I know that has it for a mascot was our company softball team a few years ago when we came in second place one year but they changed it the next year to Bombers.

To really understand about them you need to read the great short story La Guerra de los Yacares by Horacio Quiroga. It is in spanish and is used to know how to get the translation. It isn't a long story and maybe someone can help and post the link.
