according to their website, GIlmer had all state selections in 1953 and 1981. And after that they have had 12 since 2003. That is wild....

Times in Gilmer are much better now than they have been in a very long time. The only other time Gilmer had been to a state championship game, besides in 2004, was in 1981, when my parents were still in high school.

Sounds somewhat like Burnet's history. Burnet had never even won a playoff game until 1991, they eventually made it to state that year losing to Groesbeck, and have been to two more state title games since and have enjoyed many playoff runs other than the state finals years in between 91 & 06. Before 1991, many had never even heard of Burnet football, and with good reason...

It's also somewhat of an exaggeration if we are talking about consensus first-team all-staters.

Derek McKenzie was legitimately first-team all-state in 2003, although there was another QB that year who also laid claim to it.

Manuel Johnson was, of course, not only all-state, but Class 3A player of the year in 2004.

Fred Walker was all-state as a lineman in 2003.

If anyone can name any more first-team all-staters besides those from 2003 until now, I'd like to see their names added to the list. It's not 12, though. That has to be counting second- and third-teamers and maybe even honorable mentions.

Okay, I've thought of one more who probably made one or more as a first team selection and that would be Daniel Dodd. I'm sure there are more.
