ASC Conference "championship game" ... HSU #5 in DIII, UMHB #12

from UMHB web site ::

Belton, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team knows exactly what will be on the line when the Crusaders host nationally ranked Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday. The winner of the UMHB-HSU has gone on to win at least a share of the American Southwest Conference championship in each of the previous eight regular season meetings. The two teams enter Saturday's 2:00 PM kickoff at Tiger Field as the only two teams till unbeaten in ASC play and the winner of Saturday's game will have sole possession of first place. The Crusaders, ranked 12th in the nation in the D3football.com Top 25, enter the game with a 3-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark in ASC play. The Cowboys, ranked 5th nationally by D3football.com, enter the game at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the ASC. Hardin-Simmons leads the all-time series 5-4, but the Crusaders have won four of the last five meetings.

"I think every game from here on out is big for us," Crusaders head coach Pete Fredenburg said. "To reach the goals these guys have set, we need to go out and win the conference. This is why you play the game, to have a chance to play in big games like this and be in this type of atmosphere. I think it is a great opportunity for out kids and it should be a really neat experience."

The Crusaders are playing just their second home game of the season. HSU has not played a road game that counted so far this season. The Cowboys road game at Louisiana College on September 23rd was cancelled in the second quarter because of lightning.

This will be the deciding game for the ASC. The Cowboys will have a fight on their hands in Belton but should leave town with the win. Friedenberg is a smart coach and he has done a tremendous job developing the UMHB football program in the last 5 years.

Trinity University now 4-1 travels to Alabama to play independent Huntingdon College. That should be a good test for the Tigers on their first real road trip (Sequin and TLU being the only other road trip thus far).

DIII is to college football as to what 3a is to high school football. It is fun to watch and a real bargain (tickets are free at Trinity).:)
