The dream of a national championship for No.1 Hoover High School is over.

John Curtis Christian School of River Ridge, La., boasted one of the most electrifying players in the country coming into Friday's game, and Joe McKnight lived up to the hype, catching touchdowns passes of 80 and 45 yards in the sixth-ranked Patriots' 28-14 win over the Buccaneers.

"We put our heart and soul into this deal and came up short," Bucs coach Rush Propst said. "I did a terrible job. I, Rush Propst, did a terrible job."

Propst's offense threw for just 29 yards against Patriots coach J.T. Curtis' defense, while giving up 269 yards to the Patriots on the ground.

Hoover had great field position early thanks to a blocked punt by Josh Linson. That gave the Bucs the ball at their own 47-yard line.

Behind a key block from Dennis King, Bucs running back Michael Hall punched in a 4-yard touchdown run to give Hoover an early 7-0 lead.

Patriots running back Darryl Brister fumbled the pitch from quarterback Kyle Collura on John Curtis' first play from scrimmage on the following drive, and Bucs linebacker Andrew Satriano fell on the ball on the Patriots 15-yard line.

On third-and-13 from the John Curtis 18, Bucs quarterback Ross Wilson deftly avoided the rush and found a wide-open Charlie Zorn in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

But as the first quarter wound down, Hoover's special teams began to fall apart.

Hoover's woes began with a 16-yard punt that gave John Curtis the ball at its own 46. Twelve plays later, on fourth-and-goal, an inch from the end zone, Collura leaped over his left guard into the end zone to bring the score to 14-7.

Hoover's Jordan Means was short on a 47-yard field goal attempt, and one play later, Collura hooked up with McKnight, who went untouched 80 yards, evening the score at 14 apiece.

The Bucs tried another field goal, but this time it was Juan Siles who missed a 34-yarder that would have given Hoover the lead. The Patriots took over at their own 20.

Hoover's defense forced John Curtis into a fourth-and-four at their own 27, and the Patriots tried to quickly switch its offense onto the field instead of its punting unit, but couldn't pull the play off without being flagged for an illegal shift.

Hoover got the ball back twice before the half ended, but turned the ball over on the first play of each drive - on an interception by Wilson and a fumble by King. John Curtis ran out the clock to send the game to halftime tied 14-14.

John Curtis took the lead 21-14 early in the second half when running back David Seaman broke one tackle and ran 50 yards into the end zone. John Curtis became the first team to lead Hoover this season.

The Patriots weren't finished, as Collura hooked up with McKnight again, this time on a 45-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 28-14.

The loss is Hoover's second in as many years, and now Propst's job will be to shift the team's focus to winning its fifth consecutive Class 6A championship.

"We're going to have to do some soul-searching and see what we're made of," Propst said.
