Port Isabel wins third straight

The Tarpons didn’t waste any time asserting their will on the Universidad Autonoma De Coahuila Lobos Friday. Senior running back Ralph Valdez took the pitch from quarterback David Alaniz and ran 61 yards to paydirt.

Port Isabel and Valdez did not disappoint the homecoming crowd, scoring 41 straight points before the Lobos scored with eight seconds left in the game to earn a 41-6 victory.

Valdez scored the first three touchdowns on runs of 80 and five yards to go along with the 61 yard scamper to begin the game. He finished with 215 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries.

Coach Monty Stumbaugh shut Valdez down midway through the second quarter to avoid injury. Several other Tarpons stepped up to pour it on.

Quarterback David Alaniz connected with wide receiver Greg Gayton for a 29 yard touchdown pass with 1:35 left in the first half.

After a scoreless third period, running back Diego Garcia capped a 12 play, 75 yard drive, with a 12 yard touchdown run in the fourth. Backup quarterback Clemente Valdez added a 50 yard touchdown run to put the Tarpons up 41-0.

Lobos quarter back Ramiro Bosque threw a 26 yard touchdown pass to Juan Medina with eight seconds left to avoid the shut out.

“The defense played good,” Stumbaugh said. “We are getting better. The younger guys are getting better.”

Coach Stumbaugh added, “We are trying to (gain momentum towards district). Everyone (in district) is tough but, we want to show what we can do.”
