PITTSBURGH -- The Houston Astros are still in this thing.

Brad Ausmus' sacrifice fly in the 15th inning lifted the Astros to a 7-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and, more importantly, allowed them to maintain their 1 1/2-game deficit to the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central division race.

The Cardinals beat the Padres, 4-2, which put the Astros in the unenviable position of having to be perfect through an extra-inning affair that forced them to use eight pitchers.

The Astros have won eight in a row, improving to 80-78 with four games remaining on the regular-season schedule.

The Astros were trailing, 6-5, in the ninth inning when Luke Scott knocked a two-out RBI single to send the game to extra frames.

Lance Berkman knocked a two-run homer in the sixth, his 44th long ball of the season, to move into second place on the club's career homer list. Berkman passed Jimmy Wynn, who knocked 223 home runs during his Astros career. Jeff Bagwell owns first place with 449.

this makes for good post-season DVD material if they make the playoffs
