Ad I am not sure what their overall record is. They are a young team and lost several games at the start of the year but they are
vastly improved now. West Oso is 18-3 overall. Below is a photo from the game. I don't know who #10 is. Maybe Pirate4State can help.

Sinton jumps into district lead with win

The battle for District 30-3A volleyball supremacy was no contest Tuesday night.

"CoCo," "Jewels" and their Sinton teammates were just too much for West Oso on this night.

The hard-hitting Pirates disposed of West Oso in convincing fashion in a battle of returning playoff teams, 25-12, 25-14, 25-21 at West Oso High School.

Sinton improved to 4-0 in district play to take a one-match lead in the district standings. The stunned Bears (18-3 overall), meanwhile, fell to 3-1 in district.

"We're the team to beat in the district now," Sinton coach Virginia Parsons said, "but we still have to play hard. We can't let down at all."

"They're first in the district now - they have the edge," West Oso coach Cheryl Fillmore said. "We talked about how good Sinton was, but maybe we talked about it too much, because we just came out and completely froze. It was an ugly (match)."

Not for Sinton, however, who received a match-high 10 kills and four blocks from sophomore middle blocker Caitlin "CoCo" Cave.

Kacee Castillo, Megan Perry and Clarissa Moreno also combined for 34 points off serves for the Pirates, while setters Julie Rodriguez - who the players call "Jewels" - and Castillo contributed 12 assists. Defensive specialist Mimi May also had a match-high 15 digs for Sinton.

Junior setter/outside hitter Novella Thomas led West Oso with five kills, while senior outside hitter Kei'Ara Watson added five blocks for the Bears.

Sinton held a 13-10 lead in the opener before using a 12-2 run to break it open.

The sophomore setter/outside hitter Castillo's eight straight service points highlighted the run, while Cave had a big kill and block and sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Whitney Foley added a key kill during the Pirates' spurt. Moreno closed Game 1 for Sinton with three consecutive service points.

The Pirates also built a 14-7 lead in Game 2. Cave later added two service points, junior Kristine Cluiss had a big block and Perry served up three straight service points to help Sinton take that one, too.

West Oso stormed out to a 6-1 lead in Game 3 thanks to senior outside hitter Ashley Woods and sophomore setter Anastasia Fillmore combining for three service points.

The Pirates used a 12-7 run to knot the game at 13 on one of Perry's two aces on the night.

West Oso responded to take a 17-13 lead on a kill by Thomas, before Castillo followed with four straight service points for the Pirates to tie it again at 17.

The game was later tied at 18, 19, 20 and 21 before the senior setter/outside hitter Rodriguez closed it out for Sinton with four consecutive service points.

"West Oso has some really good players, so I told the kids not to sit back and they didn't," Parsons said.

"We started to relax and play our game in the third game, so hopefully we can take something from that into our next match (with Sinton later in the season)," Fillmore said.
