I am planning a trip to San Diego in October with my wife. Does anyone have any ideas on what we could do while we are there? Places to eat? Attractions not to miss? etc.... Would like to make it a special trip for my wife!!! Will be there on a conference and will have one whole day for site seeing. Any help would be appreciated...have never been to california. Thanks in advance....

Don't know if it's your cup of tea or not, but the San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the world. It's so big, you would have to spend your whole day there though. Same area as the zoo is Balboa Park. Very beautiful and interesting. The drive over the Coronado Bridge to Coronado Island is breathtaking and the island itself is beautiful. The Scripps Aquarium is awesome as well.

There are so many different things to do around there. It's probably my favorite place in the states. I spent four years around there when I was in the Marine Corps and I still don't think I've seen everything.

I seem to remember some good times down around La Jolla. Nice beaches, beautiful area. There's a Maritime Museum. There's the world famous San Diego Zoo. There's the MCAS Miramar Air Show that should be quite entertaining. There's the big cross on mount Soledad (got drunk on my 21st at the bottom of that thing). There are biking and kayak tours.

For eats, try Tom Ham's American Lighthouse at the far end of Harbor Island near the airport. Good seafood, steaks and other meals. Great view of the harbor, navy ships, etc.

1) San Diego Zoo- one of the finest zoos in the world. A days worth of fun for very little money. I love the apes!

2) Coronado Island: rent a sailboat and sail around the harbor. Visit the Grand Hotel Coronado.

3) La Jolla Village: the Cote d'Azur of California repleat with great restaurants, site seeing , beaches, and beautiful views.

4) Mission Bay: rent a sailboat, have a ball in the Mission Bay.

5) Sea World: best one in America

6) great seafood in Pt Loma and on the waterfront in San Diego.

7) Go deep sea fishing if you have a wife that likes fishing. Boats leave in AM daily from Pt. Loma.

8) For budget minded, a day in Balboa Park to take in the Arboretum. Picnicing on the green. Afternoon shopping and diner in Old Town for authentic Mexican cuisine.

I lived in Sd in 1970's. It is a great city. You wil have a great time.:D

I lived in San Diego for 6 months and u can literally do anything u can imagine in that great city.. somethings to see

1. Beaches (Mission is my favorite, but Corando and pacific are good too)

2. Navy Ships (San Diego has a huge military population that is very friendly to tourist)

3. Mexico (only 15 minutes from tijauna)

4. L.A. (only a 2 hour drive, and they have another zillion things to do)

5. Coronado Bridge (huge, although it only takes about 5 minutes to see, its amazing)

6. Qualcomm Stadium (since your there in October, u might be able to sneak in a Chargers game, its always cool to see a different stadium)

7. Eat, eat, eat (Because San Diego has such a diverse community, you can have a wide veriety of foods with top of the line authentic taste)

8. Horse Races (The Del Mar race track is awesome, my uncle drug me there last time I visited, I thought I would hate it, but ended up having a blast)

9. Old Town (The historic part of town, still has buildings from the original spanish settlement, very cool to see if you are in to that stuff)

10. Mountains (If you visit east San Diego County, you can drive up into the mountains and catch some spectacular views, but I'm kinda biased to this part because thats where I lived)

11. Sea World (You know what sea world is, but its always neat to see, there are more animals at this one then the other 2)

12. ARCO Olympic Training Center (One of only two Olympic training centers in the country, most summer Olympic athletes train here, and the admission is free, always a plus)

13. Casinos (Due to the indian reservations that surround the city, there a few to choose from if you like that kinda stuff)

14. San Diego ZOO (Was once the largest zoo in the country, and might still be but i'm not sure, but has every animal you can think of.. Would definently take all day to see)

15. La Jolla (a rich community off the beach, but has alot of shopping oppurtunities, and is really pretty)

There are about a zillion other things to do in San Diego, but these are the first 15 to come to mind.. if u have any questions u can ask me..

Go see the seals at La Jolla for sure and the San Diego zoo is simply one of the top two in the country. Take a ride out from Escondido towards Ramona and Julian. The drive from San Diego towards Yuma is spectacular to say the least. You drop in elevation several thousand feet and there are mountains that are nothing but rock. No vegetation at all and the interstate was cut right through it. I personally think it is the prettiest part of the country(san Diego Area).
