We have won 47 NCs in all sports at UT. Very nice indeed.

UT has won forty seven national championships as of today's date (October 2, 2006). This consists of 46 NCAA titles and 1 AWIA titile. The one AWIA title was won by our 1981 Women's Volleyball team which was under the control of the AWIA (Association for Women's Intercollegiate Athletics). After that year all women's sports was put under the NCAA.
UT's National Championships consist of the following.

4 Football 1963, 1969, 1970, 2005
6 Baseball 1949, 1950, 1975, 1983, 2002, 2005
2 Men's Golf 1971, 1972
9 Men's Swimming and Diving 1981, 1988, 1989, 1990,
1991, 1996, 2001, 2002. 2003

9 Women's Swimming and Diving 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986,
1987, 1988, 1990, 1991
1 Women's Basketball 1986
1 Women's Cross Country 1986
2 Women's Tennis 1993, 1995

6 Women's Indoor Track and Field 1986, 1988, 1990, 1998,
1999, 2006

5 Women's Outdoor Track and Field 1982, 1986, 1998, 1999,
2005
2 Volleyball 1981, 1988

Excellent indeed. As one can see we have won 21 NCs in Men's Sports and 26 NCs in Women's Sports.

Thanks for sharing AggieJohn. Another member of that team was Mr. Harold Cowley who lived in Freer across the street from me at the same time when I was a boy. A fine man. I wish I could have got a 1939 photo of him. He wasn't a starter but he did play enough to letter.

I found out the Lady Aggies won the softball National Championship twice in 1983 and 1987. It would be nice to get a picture of them indeed.

Below is a photo of the 1969 National Champions in football. They had a perfect 10 - 0 regular season record. They defeated Arkansas in the famous shootout at the end of the season 15 to 14. Then in the Cotton Bowl they defeated Notre Dame 21 to 17 and were voted NC unanamously by all the polls.

I saw the ATM softball team play several times in 1987, friend of the family was on that team, great team...
also saw UT play several baseball games in '05... nice team there as well... former student was on that team

Below are four copies of Sports Illustrated of four of our National Championship Years in football. The first one is from 1963 and the picture is of QB Duke Carlisle after the big win against Oklahoma. The second is of OB James Street in 1969 scoring a td against Arkansas.
The third one is our Full Back Steve Worster in 1970 and I think this one is from the Arkansas game. Eddie Phillips was our QB that year and he did a fantastic job.
The fourth is obvious as Vince Young scores against USC.

A careless error on my part that fortunately I caught by research. This was the 1993 Women's tennis team that won the NC. We didnt' win it in 1983. Apologia!

As added interest this team won the National Championship but had lost the Big 12 Championship Meet to Nebraska. It would be nice to have had both but I'll take a national championship over a conference championship any time.

I would start an ACU National championship moment, but there are two factors to think about.

1. Would anyone care?

2. ACU ranks 4th all time in the nation behind USC, UCLA and Stanford for the most championships. So it would take a while!;)
