MONAHANS -- Russell Covington picked up where he left off the week before.

Covington picked off three Andrews passes to spark a 49-25 come-from-behind homecoming victory for the Loboes on Friday night.

The Loboes (3-0) came back from an early 17-0 deficit with 35 unanswered points, 368 rushing yards and forced five Andrews turnovers. Monahans has had to come back from an early deficit in each of its three wins so far this season.

"Andrews did some things that hurt us but I don't think our kids were really focused before the game," Monahans coach Mickey Owens said. "If you're not a little bit focused, Andrews is a good enough team to make you pay for it. The worse possible thing was Fort Stockton beating Andrews last week. Those coaches at Andrews had them plenty mad and they came out and fired their 'A' game."

The Mustangs (1-3) received a 37-yard field goal by Cory Lee and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Fernando Guevara to Eddie Bueno for a 10-0 first quarter advantage.

Andrews made it 17-0 with 10:25 remaining in the second quarter when Guevara scored from a yard out. The score was set up by a 36-yard run by Oscar Moralez.

The Loboes woke up with a 69-yard run by Chris Roberson on the ensuing possession. Roberson cut to his left and ran down the near sideline for the score. Roberson had 123 of his 194 rushing yards in the first half despite having to shake off some sickness, according to Owens.

A fumbled snap by Andrews gave Monahans the ball at the Mustang 39-yard-line on the following possession. Three plays later, the Loboes capitalized on the turnover when Josh Rodriguez rumbled for a 4-yard TD run to cut the Mustang lead to 17-14 at the half.

The Loboes started the second half with a bang thanks to Devon Fann who returned the kickoff 86 yards for a score and a 21-17 advantage.

Owens said that his team didn't make too many adjustments at the break, but added that he did some chewing out.

"Some of them were a little lighter in the britches," Owens said.

Covington's third interception of the night late in the third quarter set up a 39-yard scoring pass from Kenny Almanza to a wide open Chris Bates for a 28-17 lead.

"Russell Covington is coming on," said Owens of his senior safety, who had the game-sealing interception last week in the 26-21 win over Midland Christian. "He made some great catches."

As the game wore on, the Loboes continued to pound it on the ground with Roberson and Rodriguez, who added 157 yards on 20 carries. Roberson scored on a 13-yard run and Rodriguez added a 2-yard TD run to cap off the Loboes' scoring.

Guevara led the way for Andrews as he passed for 204 yards, rushed for 83 yards and accounted for all three of the Mustangs' touchdowns.
