This was the first big game to come out of our state on the college level and was covered nationally.
The year before our Texas was recognized as a power football playing state when on the same weekend in Indiana UT beat powerful Notre Dame 7 to 6 and Rice beat a highly ranked Purdue team 14 to 0.

Both teams were ranked teams and the winner was to go to the Rose Bowl. SMU had the great RB Bobby Wilson while TCU had the great QB from Sweetwater Sammy Baugh (who later had great success in the NFL at Washington). SMU was a slight underdog but scored first and had a 14 to 0 lead. TCU came back and tied the game in the fourth quarter with 12 minutes left. SMU moved the ball but had a fourth down. The punter who was a QB faked the punt and threw it to Wilson near the goal line. This was a critical play that was probably for all or nothing because had it not connected TCU would have had good field position and with Sammy they might have won it. The pass was over Wilson's head and he had to jump up and juggled it finally getting control as he fell over the goal line to win the game 20 - 14.

This game was covered nationwide by radio and had top sportswriters including the popular Grantland Rice who called it one of the best football games ever played. Great game for our state as well as the schools which showed the great good done by UT and Rice the year before.

SMU was awarded the MNC by some of the polls (remember the NC was decided during the regular season). SMU lost a tough Rose Bowl game to Stanford 7 - 0 while TCU played LSU in the Sugar Bowl winning that game by a strange 3 - 2 score.
