View Full Version : Top Ten (nf)

A co-worker and I were having a debate on the Top Ten or 15 musical artists of all time. There is a slight generational gap involved, but it was an interesting debate. This includes all genres, and does not necessarily have to be by records sold. It should include musical talent.

Here are mine:
1. Rush
2. Van Halen
3. Beatles
4. Elvis Presley
5. Johnny Cash
6. Metallica
7. George Strait
8. Boston
9. AC/DC
10. Chicago
11. BeeGees
12. Garth Brooks
13. Journey
14. Air Supply
15. Neil Diamond

some left out included on my co-workers list: Eagles, Buddy Holly, Hank Williams, Led Zepplin, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Rolling Stones

I have to disagree on Rush, they were one of if not the most musicaly talented group ever.

Another one I just thought of was Pink Floyd.

what about a U2 or an Aerosmith type???

And we can't forget about Sinatra, Charles, BB King.

Sinatra - one of the greatest voices in "pop culture,"

Charles - for his ability to perform as well as his ability to cross all borders, whether racial, musical, or whatever else you can think of.

BB King - not only as a talented guitar player...but also for his longevity in the industry. When the world kept changing and trying to push him away...he just kept on playing and drawing in the crowds. You could equate him and Willie Nelson in the same light because "they didn't let time pass them by...even though it tried."

Rush was incredibly talented...and much of that talent laid in the hands of Neil Peart. This man had a bigger kit than anybody else I've ever seen. He made Carter Beauford's setup look like child's play.

Speaking of Beauford...you can also include the DMB as one of the most talented bands ever. Combine Matthew's songwriting and stage presence with some of the most talented players on their respected instruments...WOW!!!

Neil Peart's solo in, I think it is YYZ, is still one of the greatest I've ever heard.

That Neil Pert kit is awesome. Here are some of the ones Mike Portnoy uses. I'll try to find Danny Carey's as well.

Yeah. Got fourth row a bit off center. I'm still waiting to see what Tool plans on doing about last Tuesday's last minute concert postponing. They canceled last night's gig in Madison, and I'm afraid they'll end up doing so to the SA show as well. :(

I like them both, I just didn't put them in the list. That is problem with a list like this, after everyone else puts their 2 cents in, you may want to change your own list. I know I did after some people reminded me of some that I forgot.

Nice. I was 3rd row in the seats at AAC as close to the stage as I could get (they were $50 instead of $100 for floor seats). Well I put them on eBay with a BIN of $350 and a reserve of $300...6 hours later somebody paid $350 for them. Making $250 more than justified selling them I guess. I wanted to go...but I can't turn down that kind of money right now. I'll catch them in the Spring in Vegas when I can probably swing free tickets through some of the people we are going with! ;) I did see a segment on the DCI broadcast on ESPN talking about how some of the guys in the New York show are ex-DCI guys. Glad to see DCI drummers (some of the most talented all-around guys) moving into other genres of percussion with success.

A few that I would put on the list are Foghat, ZZTop, Thin Lizzy, and especially Bob Seger.

they have musical talent??? They use the same chord progressions in 80+ % of their songs!!! Their first album was "original." Their second...a re-write of their 1st album. Their 3rd album a combination of the 1st 2 albums. They did a few nifty key changes, changed up the guitar solos and lyrics...and sold a lot of records with the same material.

There's no denying the popularity of hip hop, but that style cannot compare to the music of rock, country, blues, and jazz. Here are a few reasons why. 1) Almost all hip hop music sounds the same - a couple of dudes with a microphone singing catchy lyrics with a computerized drum beat to back them up. I'll admit that the lyrical content is at least sometimes savvy, but 2) too many artists use excessive vulgarities in their brand of hip hop. This puts hip hop in an undesirable category all by itself.

3) In the other genres of music, you see alot of talented MUSICIANS. How many hip hop artists actually play an instrument? Hardly any. This alone creates a huge disparity between the TALENT - not popularity - but TALENT between hip hop and the other styles I mentioned - rock, country, blues, and jazz. 4) Many years from now, I don't think a lot of people will look at hip hop in the same way they view the legends of other musical styles. It's popularity will eventually fade, just like disco from the 70's, techno-pop/new wave of the 80's, and grunge metal of the 90's, whereas rock, country, blues, and jazz will remain commonplace among music lovers worldwide.

Just my two cents...

Listen to John Legend, Kanye West, and the Roots. if anything, the roots. and people have been saying hip hop music would fade away since 1979 when the Sugar Hill Gang came out with Rappers Delight. Its been almost 30 years... not going to happen.

APC is good, but Maynard is the only reason they're even compared to or hold a candle to Tool.

3. I'm not that big a fan, but I appreciate their work.
4. No. Brian road Trent's coattails to the top all while producing a generic version of NIN.
5. No. Untalented nu-metal.
6. Love Rob's old outfit, but it was pretty basic speed/thrash metal.
7. Nothing really special there aside from Peter Steele's booming voice.
8. Rob's little bro had a great debut CD, but its been pretty boring mainstream pop rock since.
9. Never heard of them.
10. Definitely belongs higher on your list.

Good list overall, though. :)

My Top Ten: (order changes dependant on mood)

1. Bright Eyes - Omaha folk music. Great musicianship with vivid image producing lyrics.
2. Nine Inch Nails - Always solid. Nearly two decades of evolution and Reznor still rocks and manages to create mostly all of his music.
3. Tool - Thought provoking lyrics matched with bizarre time changes and shifts. A total attack on your senses.
4. Alice in Chains - The dark band of the grunge days. Likely the most talented as well. Songs like Rooster and their incredible unplugged performance come to mind.
5. Faith No More - Mike Patton and Co. deliver every time. Every album sounds different. These guys are more than just Epic. Way more.
6. Mr. Bungle - Another Patton outfit. Strange. Very strange. But very very good.
7. Spock's Beard - Prog-rock band. Immense content. Songs that go on for days and crisp, clean instrumentation.
8. Rage Against the Machine - Politcal awareness with groove, funk, and beats. The total package.
9. Explosions in the Sky - A Central Texas mainstay, their work on Friday Night Lights was only a glimpse of their talent.
10. Dashboard Confessional - Call me emo if you want, but it takes a lot of talent to strum the way Chris Carabba does, especially in his earlier efforts where it was a one man show. Current backing band isn't all that great and drags him down.

Listen to John Legend, Kanye West, and the Roots. if anything, the roots. and people have been saying hip hop music would fade away since 1979 when the Sugar Hill Gang came out with Rappers Delight. Its been almost 30 years... not going to happen.

Rap didn't begin to catch on until the late 80's. Sugar Hill Gang may have experimented with it in '79, but they didn't make a national impact like rap did with the emergence of Run DMC. You really have to start in the late 80's to mark the beginning of rap's popularity. Hip hop didn't formulate from rap until the early 90's, so it has more of a 10 - 15 year history in it's current form.

Furthermore, hip hop has taken what was once known as rap and dwarfed it into an oversimplified sound. Also, the frequent use of offensive language, violence against women, etc. does not resonate with most people, and it never will. Hip hop contains too much of this. Twenty years from now we won't be talking about hip hop artists in the same vein as the legends of rock, country, jazz, and blues. Again, I'm not denying it's popularity, but hip hop does not have the staying power as other styles. Time will prove this.

i understand what you are saying, but you totally missed something i said. you asked how many of the hip hop artists actually played instruments. Alot more than you would imagine.
The Roots are a Band of Hip Hoppers.
Kanye West plays Piano, Drums, and some guitar.
John Legend is a genius at the keys of a piano.
Lyfe Jennings played the Apollo with only a guitar.
Olu Dara and Nas both play jazz instruments. Nas is Olu Dara's son.
Dr Dre plays piano, has to being a producer.
Mos Def plays some instruments, im not sure what. those are HIP HOP artists.
Rap artists don't play instruments. there IS a difference, to me anyway :)

Frankly, I don't see hip-hop and rap going anywhere. Its the fastest growing musical genre, and is marketed hand in hand with NFL and NBA. This growth and opportunity should lead to more talented artists who actually have something to say and aren't just in it for a buck.

And as for it all sounding similar, the same could be said of any genre if the statement comes from someone whose ears aren't trained in said genre. I don't listen to country, so when I hear the stuff, I don't have a chance in Hades of telling it apart. Doesn't mean that's the case for the fans of it.

I can't stand Kanye West. He is the biggest crybaby EVER. I liked rap while in school, but is mostly the same old garbage now.

Different spin, with a bunch of newer bands, but I'll interject mine.
If you're saying musically talented, then I say it's this order:

1) Tool
2) Perfect Circle
3) System of a Down
4) Marilyn Manson
5) Static X
6) White Zombie
7) Type O Negative
8) Powerman 5000
9) Blood Simple
10) Rage Against the Machine

Can't wait for the comments on this one!:D
Now that is a good list. I would have to add Blink 182 though. And to think, Blink is made up of only 3 people..... Too bad they split up.

I don't like Marilyn Manson's lyrics, but I have to admit, they are clever. I just love their sound.

I almost forgot about Deftones. They belong on this list as well.

You named some good examples. My point is still this. Sure, hip hop artists can carry a tune and spit out some funky rhymes, but the musical talent isn't comparable. When you look at the hip hop industry as a whole, the majority of the artists do not play instruments, whereas you have many more great instrumentalists in the other music genres. Jazz in particular.

That's only true to a certain extent. When you look at all of the musical styles we've discussed here, hip hop sounds more repetitive than all the others. When you consider rock, you have classic rock, grunge rock, soft rock, Southern rock, dance rock, acoustic rock...the list goes on. With jazz, you have big band, bop, smooth jazz, piano jazz, traditional/New Orleans style jazz, etc. Blues is a style that has influenced many styles in the rock era. Plus, you can consider acoustic blues, country blues, folk blues, harmonica blues, and some earlier styles rooted in Memphis and Chicago. Country music branches out into bluegrass, gospel, outlaw country, country & western, Americana, and traditional country.

With hip hop, you have, well...just hip hop, with a close cousin in rap. By the way, the fastest growing musical genre in all of music is Contemporary Christian Music.

Good list overall, though. :)

4. Musically, I think Brian Warner is genious. The way he achieved star status may be suspect, but I still appreciate the music, and believe him to be a brilliant lyricist.

5. I take great objection to the "untalented" comment. Static X is truly not everyone's "cup of tea", but the talent is irrefutable.

6. Personal favorite......always have loved the originality and the utter lunacy of Rob's lyrics and style.

7. Only Type O could've remade "Summer Breeze", made it rock, and still kept some semblance of the original version of that gay song. ( And Peter Steele's wang should earn respect on its own!):D

And yes!

"Nails" belongs on the list, probably at the "#2" spot. I honestly forgot about them as I came into this thread during the "hip hop" discussion, and could not concentrate due to the nausea.:D
