That is very tragic. I remember last winter during basketball season when a JV player at Bullard died in warm-ups before a game. My family and I will pray for that school and the family.

very sad and goodness knows a high school physical can't uncover many medical conditions....:(

thoughts and prayers for the family, friends and school....

This is very sad. Unfortunately this happens almost every year and it is preventable. The most likely cause is hypertrophic cadiomyopathy, a thickening of the walls of the heart. It is asymptomatic and can cause sudden death during extreme exertion. A young man from Everman I believe died running laps with his coach for disciplinary reasons a couple of seasons ago from this anomaly. It can be diagnosed with a sonocardiogram. Austin Heart started a program in Central Texas in 2003 to scan any player at a school for free. The school provided an office in town on a Saturday morning and any player interested could show up for the scan. I don't know if they still do this but it was a wonderful community service. My son and many other players in the area went. Austin Heart scans UT players before each season. Any UT player coming up positive can keep his scholarship even though he must give up football (just as in the recent case of the Westlake recruit who passed out Friday). This should become the standard throughout Texas. A cardiosonogram for every player would save one or two lives each year.
