10. DISTRICT 18-3A
Rockdale's 27-0 shutout loss to Caldwell aside, District 18-3A is looking awfully tough this season. Cameron Yoe and Hutto are potential state championship contenders. Liberty Hill is 2-0 and has a nice home win over Class 4A Burnet. No team in the district has a losing record.
9. LA GRANGE
The Leopards are 2-0, and quarterback Matt Woods returned to the lineup in last week's win over Yoakum after missing the opener (a win over Lockhart). Giddings shouldn't be quaking in its boots for 23-3A play, but the Leopards could have a much better season than many thought they would.
8. GARRETT GILBERT
Weren't we talking about him last week too? Yes, for good reason. Even though Lake Travis lost to Westlake, the sophomore QB threw for 246 yards and a touchdown against the No. 7-ranked team in Class 5A.
7. 17-4A: AND THEY'RE OFF!
The downside of playing in a nine-team district? Your district schedule starts way, way early. This week kicks off the 17-4A schedule and two of the opening matchups are real doozies: Defending district champion McCallum vs. playoff team Lanier, and LBJ (the other playoff team from last year) vs. Crockett, which is moving down from Class 5A.
6. MUST-SEE THURSDAY
Not TV. High school football.
This week features some nice Thursday night matchups: McCallum-Lanier (Nelson Field), LBJ-Crockett (Burger Stadium) and Hays-Cedar Park (Bible Stadium).
5. QUARTERBACK WOES
Several Central Texas quarterbacks have suffered early-season injuries. Lago Vista, which lost Hugh Handcox during a scrimmage, is 0-2. Connally's Darius Darks missed last week's opener, a 17-14 home loss to Fredericksburg. And McCallum lost Kevin Lusson to a sprained ankle last week. The Knights lost 17-0.
4. LEANDER
The Lions are looking more and more like the team to beat in District 14-5A. They beat Converse Judson on the road, then came within a field goal of A&M Consolidated, the state's fourth-ranked team. With Pflugerville still looking for its first win, Leander's looking stronger than ever.
3. WILLIAMSON COUNTY
This may be the strongest across-the-board county in Central Texas when it comes to football, with Leander, Hutto and Liberty Hill leading the way. Georgetown, Westwood, McNeil, Stony Point, Round Rock, Thrall and Jarrell are looking good as well.
2. WESTLAKE
The Chaparrals looked strong again in a nice win over Lake Travis. The defense is playing very well, and Westlake, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A, has a golden opportunity to leap up a few more spots if it can beat No. 4 A&M Consolidated this week.
1. McCALLUM
What happened to the Knights? After dominating the Austin school district the past couple of years, McCallum suffered a 17-0 loss to Austin High, one week after the Maroons lost to Westwood, which went 2-8 last year.
Lusson was injured, Marcus Mann was held to 170 fewer yards than the week before, and the Knights ran into a Maroons defense on a very good night.
Don't worry, though. There's nothing like the start of 17-4A play to get your mind off a loss. McCallum, expected to roll through the district when the season started, still should.
