Defense caves in on Bears

Decatur 42, Brewer 7

Decatur football coach Kyle Story was not thrilled by his offense’s performance last week against Burkburnett. Therefore, he expected significant improvement Friday night when his Eagles hosted the Class 4A Brewer Bears.

The offense delivered and it has the defense and special teams to thank for it. The Decatur defense held the Bears to 30 first-half yards and caused four turnovers to help fuel a 42-7 victory.

The game got out of hand before the first period ever ended. DHS scored 36 points and collected 237 of its 315 totals yards, all in the first 12 minutes of the game.

“We picked it up tonight. The offense played a whole lot better and the defense did its thing,” Story said. “We’ve still got a lot of things to work on. We don’t look great yet but that’s okay because we want to be at our best in November.”

Decatur is now 2-0 for the season and will face Sweetwater next Thursday in Brownwood. Brewer slipped to 0-2.

DHS quarterback Brandon Cobb led the early scoring assault as he recorded all three of his touchdowns in the first period. He scored on runs of 29 and 10 yards and also completed a 9-yard TD pass to Kristo Cardenas.

One of Cobb’s scores was set up by a Jose Luevanos fumble recovery on DHS first kick-off. Justin Unger came up with the biggest defensive play of the night when he tipped and caught his first interception of the season and ran it back 39 yards for a touchdown.

Brewer’s only score came between two DHS scores when Jared Kinsey outran the defense for a 59-yard TD catch.

Decatur’s Josh Trant punched in the final score of the first quarter when he broke outside of the defense for a 60-yard touchdown run with six seconds left to make it 36-7. Cardenas was good on four of five of his PAT kicks, while Brad Oates scored one two-point conversion.

The Decatur offense was silent in the second and third quarters when it managed two total yards. The defense, however, kept the Bears at bay. Four quarterback sacks by Jesse Ortiz, Jake Cobb, Joe Staley and Trant helped shut Brewer out in the final three quarters.

Trant was the leading rusher with 124 yards on 14 carries. The Bears, who managed 202 yards, were led by Kinsey who had 152 of those yards on three catches.

This is gonna be a tough game. Couple that with a letdown after a big win of Brownwood... I dunno
