Huskies off to 2-0 start after 9-6 win

OKLAHOMA CITY — There wasn’t any logical reason to believe Hirschi’s offense could make a fourth-quarter comeback Saturday night after the team fell behind to Tulsa Central.

With 11 minutes to go, the Huskies hadn’t picked up a first down. They had -21 total yards.

But maybe this Hirschi team is all about defying logic.

After C.J. Turner’s 41-yard kickoff return, Byron Ingram dashed 39 yards to the end zone on the very next play, producing the difference in the Huskies’ 9-6 victory.

But this Hirschi victory didn’t come easy. In an effort to run out the clock with less than a minute to play, the Huskies fumbled, giving the Braves the ball on Hirschi’s 8-yard line.

Central’s game-winning touchdown was called back due to holding, and Tai’del Grisby intercepted quarterback D.J. Birmingham near the end zone as time ran out.

The victory gives Hirschi its first two-game winning streak since the end of 2000. It travels to Fort Worth Castleberry next weekend.

Hirschi led 2-0 with one quarter left to play, but Birmingham exploded for a 35-yard score on fourth down with 11:06 remaining.

After Ingram’s touchdown, the Huskies’ defense had to weather three Central drives deep into their territory.

The Huskies held on fourth down twice, first on the 39-yard line and then on their 17. Birmingham, who finished with 65 yards rushing and 71 passing, was stopped inches short the second time with 2:10 left.

That set the stage for the fumble, which gave the Braves new life, if only for a short while.

Special teams also contributed to Hirschi’s first score – a safety four minutes into the game.

Turner had a 49-yard punt return on Hirschi’s first possession, but the drive stalled when Marquis Washington was tackled on the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal.

Washington made the Braves pay by nailing Central tailback Steven Mommett in the end zone.

Hirschi protected that 2-0 lead for much of three quarters, but not because of the offense. That group totaled -17 yards at the half and finished with 42 total yards and two first downs.

Ingram finished with 70 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Hirschi has played two very bad teams to start the year.
A win is a win though.

Hirshi has a better record than Graham. Sure hope the Steers can get things together come time for district.
