Bearkats send Tarpons floundering

PORT ISABEL - Costly turnovers proved too much for the Port Isabel Tarpons as the Raymondville Bearkats handed them their second loss of the season 42-34.

The fifth and final turnover of the game for the Tarpons ended their chances of another Tarpon magical come-from-behind victory in the closing minutes of the game. The fumble by quarterback David Alaniz was knocked loose from a big hit by Bearkat defensive lineman Tyson Delgado to seal the game, leaving the 'Cats to simply run out the clock.

"We need to give a lot of credit to our defense, they really got us out of a tight one early," Raymondville Head coach Alex Leal said. "The guys are finally getting used to the new set up that we're incorporating.

The game started fast, as Tarpon running back Nolan Nunez as he scampered for a 63-yard scoring run on the first play from scrimmage. Nunez finished the night with 179 rushing on five carries. The extra-point attempt would fall wide left.

Port Isabel would strike again after the Bearkat offense went three and out on their initial opening drive, this time it was the Tarpons' other running back Ralph Valdez who topped Nunez with a 68-yard run for the six of his own. Quarterback David Alaniz would connect with Nunez for the two-points on a three yard pass to the flats, give Port Isabel the 14-0 lead.

After all the momentum of the game was sitting on the Tarpons' laps early, Raymondville countered with a scoring spree of their starting with a 26-yard touch down pass to Adrian Chavez from quarterback Carlo Dominguez which sealed a 10-play drive. Dominguez finished the game with 115 yards through the air connecting with five different receivers.

Then the Bearkats scored off of their first of five turnovers on the night, this time it was Carlo Dominguez running it in himself from 19 yards out. That scoring drive started on the Tarpon 24 yard line.

A Port Isabel three and out on the following series gave the Bearkats the ball on the Tarpon 40. On the second play of the drive, running back Andrew Hernandez rumbled for 40 yards for the TD to the Bearkats the 20-14 edge. Hernandez was the Bearkat workhorse as he finished the game with 121 yards rushing on 20 carries.

"Those two guys (Dominguez and Hernandez) are the core of our offense and they came up big for us tonight," Leal said.

Horrible field position for the Tarpons on the following drive didn't phase them as Nunez raced 95 yards across the field on first down for the score.

The Seawall defense didn't show up on the Bearkats following offensive drive as they drove the 77 yards down the field to take the lead at the end of the first quarter. It was Hernandez sealing the four-play drive with a 21-yard run for the score.

The Tarpons regained their composure after ending the Bearkats next drive with an interception. PI then put together a nine play drive that was sealed by Valdez's six yard score. Port Isabel went into the halftime trailing 27-28.

After all the offensive fireworks displayed by both teams in the first half, both team's defenses finally showed up. It was a missed punt snap by the Tarpons on fourth down that gave the Bearkats the ball on the PI one yard line. Four plays later Hernandez squezzed in for the TD.

Two drives later would end in another Bearkat forced fumble, making it their fourth of the night. Domiguez would knock in another 37 yard pass to Manny Continas for the score to convert on the turnover.

PI would score one more time with 3:38 left in the game, but the fumble on their final drive would end it all.

Next week the Bearkats faces off against St. Joseph while Port Isabel takes on West Oso.

"This win gives our guys tons of confidence, and it was much needed, the Tarpons are a great team," Leal said.
