Tigers Sink Ships

BRAZOSPORT – Wharton didn’t waste any time in bouncing back from last Saturday’s opening season loss to Barbers Hill.

The Tigers built a 27-9 half-time lead and held on for a 33-23 win over Brazosport at Hopper Field Friday night.

Brazosport got back in the game with just 2:23 left in the game when Orion Stevenson raced 29 yards for a touchdown. A 2-point conversion try failed.

The Ships tried an onsides kick but the Tigers recovered it and then ran out the clock.

The loss was Brazosport’s 13th straight dating back to 2004, including a loss to Wharton last year.

Wharton got the scoring started on the opening drive. After starting at their own 36 the Exporters were called for offsides on the first play.

Three plays later on third and 8 from the 36 Jamail Shelton raced 54 yards for the touchdown. Joel Ansley’s extra point attempt was no good leaving the score 6-0 with 10:40 left .

The Exporters took advantage of a great punt to get on the board next. After moving to their own 46 the Exporters were forced to punt and the ball was downed at the Tiger two yardline.

On the next play Xavier Jackson recovered his own fumble but was down in the endzone for a safety making the score 6-2 with 6:32 left in the first quarter.

After the kickoff the Exporters took over at the Tiger 46 yardline and drove to the 11 but Erasmo Silva’s 30 yard field goal attempt was blocked and the
Tigers took over at the Exporter 24.

The Exporters got the ball back after a Tiger punt, but on second and six from their own 34, JB Brown was intercepted by Kenneth Phynon giving the Tigers the ball at the Exporter 36 yardline.

Five plays later on third and nine, Ansley connected with Shelton for 25 yards and a touchdown. Ansley ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion giving the Tigers a 14-2 lead with 8:32 left in the half.

The Exporters were forced to punt on their next possession and the Tigers took advantage.

Wharton took over at the Exporter 44 yardline and on the next play Ansley ran the ball in for the touchdown.

Brian Cervenka booted the extra point giving the Tigers a 21-2 lead with 6:28 left in the half.

The Exporters scored on their next drive. After starting at their own 41 Melvin White connected with Silva for 23 yards to the Tiger 36. On first and 10 from the Tiger 28, Stephenson picked up 15 yards to the Tiger 13.

Four plays later on second and goal, Quin Collins ran the ball in from four yards out. Silva’s extra point made the score 21-9 with 2:43 left in the half.

The Tigers got the ball back but fumbled the ball, giving the Exporters the ball at their own 46, but on the next play White fumbled the ball back and the Tigers took advantage.

After starting at their own 47, Ansley connected with Shelton for 28 yards to the Exporter 25 yardline. On third and 8 Ansley picked up eight yards to give the Tigers a first down at the Exporter 15.

On third and 10 from the 15 Ansley threw an incomplete pass and was injured on the play. After a delay of game,

Cervenka connected with K.C. Curtis for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked leaving the Tigers with a 27-9 lead with 25 seconds left in the half.

The Tigers added to their lead with 5:43 left in the third.

Kody Earls picked up an Exporter fumble and raced 25 yards for a touchdown. Ansley threw an incomplete pass after his extra point attempt was blocked, leaving the score 33-9.

Brown connected with Emanuel Alvarado with one second left in the third, and then connected with Charles Darthard for the 2-point conversion to make the score 33-17.

Ansley picked up 71 yards on ten carries and Shelton picked up 66 yards on four carries. Shelton also caught four passes for 67 yards.

Wharton, who has an open date next Friday, returns to action Sept. 22 by hosting county rival El Campo.

The Ricebirds beat Angleton 35-7 last night to improve to 2-0 and hosts Victoria Memorial next Friday.

Did you see the big DL man on b-Port. I know him. I bet it would hurt to get hit by him

yea i saw him...i didnt see much of him though...hard to believe:confused:
