Ingleside's Adams a one-man show

Five turnovers plague Miller

INGLESIDE - As far as starts to a season goes, Zach Adams is having a pretty good one.

The Ingleside High School senior helped the Mustangs to their second consecutive victory Friday night, scoring two touchdowns, kicking two field goals and two extra points and scoring a 2-point conversion in a 37-7 victory over turnover-plagued Miller.

Adams was coming off a big two-TD night in the season-opening 52-7 romp at Tuloso-Midway, a team in which he scored on a 92-yard run and a 99-yard kickoff return.

Adams was equally as effective against 0-2 Miller, which lost five of the 11 fumbles it committed.

Adams scored on runs of 49 and 4 yards, kicked field goals of 36 and 22 yards and scored a 2-point conversion when the snap failed, and he raced around right end following Joel Johnson's 10-yard scoring reception from R.J. Endsley.

Adams helped set up Johnson's score, too, by hauling in a 39-yard pass from Endsley that set up the Mustangs at the Miller 5. In all, Adams had four receptions for 90 yards.

With a 57-yard return of the second-half kickoff, Adams also helped set up Jeffrey Techur's 5-yard run that gave Ingleside a 21-0 lead after Johnson's 2-point conversion run on a swinging gate play.

It was a struggle for the Buccaneers, who actually outgained the Mustangs in total yards 347-297 but gutted their efforts with the five lost fumbles. Miller was held off the scoreboard until Jonathan Miller's 50-yard scoring romp up the middle with 4 minutes, 13 seconds remaining. The Miller senior fullback rushed for 169 yards on 15 carries.

Endsley, subbing for the injured Josh Coffield - one of five injured Ingleside starters who didn't play - completed 14 of his 20 passes for 183 yards, the one TD and one interception.

Prior to Miller's scoring run, the Bucs' best offensive effort came on the first possession of the game. They drove from their 17 to Ingleside's 8 before being pushed back. The Bucs' Miller did most of the legwork. He peeled off a 37-yard run on a dive play to kick off the possession. Drexel Smith chipped in with a 17-yard pass to Lupe Perez and the Bucs converted two fourth-down plays.

But the drive stalled, and Miller was pushed back to Ingleside's 18 and the Bucs failed on a field-goal try.

Ingleside responded with a 67-yard drive, highlighted by Endsley's 23-yard pass to Johnson and his 33-yarder to Adams. Adams' 36-yard field goal gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead 1:56 before the end of the first quarter.

The Bucs were unable to move the ball after being pinned deep on the ensuing kickoff and illegal block penalty. Taking over at Miller's 37, Ingleside also moved backward before Adams scored on the 49-yard reverse. His PAT kick boosted the lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter.

Miller could do nothing on its next three possessions and neither could the Mustangs on their next two. But when Ingleside's Greg Timbs forced a Roderick Taylor fumble, Cody Scheurich recovered the ball. Ingleside had the ball at Miller's 34 with 55 seconds remaining. The Mustangs drove to the 5 and Adams' 22-yard field goal gave Ingleside its 13-0 halftime edge.
