Great game by the Vandals! Sturns is awsome but Calhoun was the best player on the field. Big test this week for Van as they take on a pretty good 4A Lindale team. Story from Tyler paper:

VAN - Junior running back Jermie Calhoun had 20 carries for 260 yards and three touchdowns to spark the Van Vandals over Rusk, 42-28, Friday night.

Calhoun scored on runs of 5, 80 and 42 yards, and also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Pennington as Van improved to 2-0.

Calhoun's backfield mate, Jarvis Crawford, added 94 yards on 13 carries and scored one TD.

Quarterback Justin Sturns had a big night rushing and passing for Rusk (1-1), scoring a pair of touchdowns both ways. He rushed 23 times for 170 yards and completed 12 of 20 passes for 165 yards.

The only time Van trailed was 7-6, and the Vandals led 26-14 at halftime.

Van has two weak spots..they are not good if they fall behind, because of their lack of a true passing game...and they are not great at stopping a good spread team..BUt if they jump out on a team 7-0, they can literally shorten the game..First drive for Van took off like 7 mins of the first Q.

Both your points are valid based on last years team. This years team can score from anywhere on the field and in a hurry. Lots of weapons and the soph. qb is getting better all time. To your second point. All defenses struggle with good spread offenses (I think Tatum has an excellent D and they struggled with Gilmer). Van's D played well enough to beat Canton last year (certainly much better than Gilmer's D played Canton). I think they will be better against the pass this year. We'll see this week in Lindale against one of the best QB's in ET (Shipman).
