16-Year Old Girl Declared a Heroine After Saving Three Men at Village Creek, One Man Drowned

A young lady is being called a heroine. Witnesses say Melanie Acker saved three men from drowning Sunday afternoon at Village Creek. However one man drowned. The victim’s friends say they saw him go into the water, and he never resurfaced. 16-year old Melanie lives in Houston. She says her family frequently visits the creek to canoe. Acker says she saw some of the men jump in the water after a Frisbee. While they did have life jackets with them, she says they were not wearing them when they jumped into the water. Melanie says she saw the men struggling, and was able to save three of them, but didn`t know the other man was still in the creek. “I went out to get the paddle and the life jacket that had floated away. Suddenly they started yelling that someone was missing," she said. Eastex Canoe Rental staff says it was only fate Melanie and her family was at the creek at the time of the accident. They say the family made plans to canoe early Sunday morning to take a longer trip, but arrived late. Melanie says she recently received training from the Red Cross in water rescue.
