Mustangs run past Wichita Falls
Written by Ben Barkley
The game was simple and it worked.
The Sweetwater coaching staff wanted to keep the ball out of the hands of Wichita Falls’ spread offense and control the clock. The Mustangs did just that as it scored a 24-14 win in the season opener Friday night.

Sweetwater controlled the clock during the first half in building a 21-6 lead and held off a late charge by the Coyotes to score the win.
“That’s big,” said head coach Kent Jackson of the win. “The offense controlled the clock. (Offensive coordinator) Al (Hunt) did a good job of keeping us patient.”
Jackson also praised defensive coordinator Shane Mobley and his staff for the work they did in stopping Wichita Falls.
“Their skill guys are so good,” Jackson said. “‘Mob’ and his staff did a great job with the schemes they cooked up.”
Jackson was also pleased with the work of the offensive line during the game. The unit, which features all new starters, helped Sweetwater control the clock with the running game. The Mustangs finished with 236 yards rushing on 45 carries.
“We wanted them to hold on long enough so Joseph (Ban-yard) and the other guys to find some creases,” he said.
The tone of the game was set early as Sweetwater’s defense held the Coyotes to three-and-out on the first series. Wichita Falls was forced to punt and the Mustangs took over from their own 38-yard line.
Controlling the clock was evident as Sweetwater ran the ball and gained four first downs on its first series. The drive ended with good news for the Mustangs as Skye Green scored on a six-yard run with 4:54 left in the first quarter. James Beckwith added the extra point as Sweetwater gained the early advantage.
However, Wichita Falls found some momentum on its second series. Quarterback Taylor Huskisson engineered a 67-yard scoring drive for the Coyotes. He capped the drive with a one-yard sneak to cut the lead to 7-6. Sweetwater blocked the extra point kick and maintained its lead with 3:13 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Mustang offense then started from its own 31 and used the clock — nearly nine minutes — to add to its lead. The drive ended when Duone Cunnings sneaked in from one yard out with 7:09 left in the first half. Beckwith added the extra point as Sweetwater held a 14-6 lead.
After the teams exchanged punts, the Sweetwater defense was able to put some points on the board. Huskisson scrambled out of the pocket on a third down play and was intercepted by Banyard. The senior returned the ball 68 yards for the score with 53 seconds left before the half. Beckwith added the extra point kick as Sweetwater took a 21-6 lead into the lockerroom.
The Sweetwater defense held Wichita Falls in check most of the second half and held the Coyotes on four plays on its first series.
Starting from its own 49, Sweetwater was able to move the ball against the defense. Banyard highlighted the series with an 18-yard run to the Wichita Falls 42.
But the Coyotes’ defense held Sweetwater and Beckwith was called on to attempt a field goal. The senior split the uprights on the 28-yard field goal as the Mustangs increased the lead to 24-6 with 3:49 left on the third quarter clock.
Wichita Falls began the fourth quarter in a hurry-up mode and cut into the advantage as Ontorio Shaw scored on a five-yard run with 7:54 left in the game. Huskisson added the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 24-14.
Sweetwater’s ensuing drive took more time off the clock, but ended when Auston Davis fumbled the ball at the Coyotes’ 24.
Huskisson and the offense continued to play the two-minute drill, but could not find the end zone in the final four minutes of the game.
Banyard led the Sweetwater rushing attack with 107 yards on 16 carries while Cunnings added 48 yards on seven carries. Davis and Green finished with 40 and 36 yards rushing, respectively.
Sweetwater will return to action Friday when its hosts Brownwood, which defeated Abilene Wylie 18-14 last week. The game is part of the second annual TSTC West Texas Sammy Baugh Classic.
