This one was embarrassing. Vernon 48-13 over the #10 ranked class 5A Altus Oklahoma Bulldogs.

Vernon's Whiteside rushes for over 200 yards and Graf rushes over 100. The Lions picked Altus off 4 times.

Vernon looked solid. I hope the cat is not out of the bag.

Great win for the Lions. I was glad that Ballinger competed well in a scrimmage with the Lions. I guess that shows why scrimmages can be very decieving.

From what I heard Vernon made some improvement after that first scrimmage. They looked very good tonight. Although they just can not throw the ball. They try too but they have no one that can catch it. Too many dropped passes. Had they just stuck with the run all night heck it may have been 75 to 13. But the Lions do have a team this year and they sure can run it. Our FB #25 Whiteside is 6 foot something and 223 pounds and just a beast. Reminds me of Curtis Burns from Atlanta several years ago.

Hey Buckeye80 ... long time no hear. My Lions haven't really had a team the past several years but they may have arrived this season.

Good to hear from you!

Me too. just goes to show that we Texas boys know how to run that rock. (I work in Lawton, Oklahoma) so I will be bragging for the entire year now!

Vernon 48 , # 11 5-A OK Altus 14

VERNON — The Vernon Lions got the better end of this Red River Rivalry Friday night as they pounded the visiting Altus Bulldogs, 38-14, with a vicious running attack and stifling defense.

The Lions (1-0) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a 45-yard sprint by 225-pound tailback Aston Whiteside. Chase Graf ended the first-quarter scoring with a 19-yard reception.

Altus tried to make some noise in the second quarter with a 63-yard hook-up between quarterback Black Sepanovich and Tony Salafia.

Graf and Whiteside put a little more distance between their Oklahoma foes with touchdown runs of 11 and 53 yards, respectively.

Stepanovich threw a 1-yard strike to Preston Runyan to end the Altus’s (0-1) scoring for the game.

Aaron Weitner rumbled 70 yards for a touchdown after a Bulldog fumble in the waning minutes of the first half.

Whiteside put another score on the board in the third quarter with a 30-yard run, followed later in the quarter by Coryan Briggs’s 16-yard run.

The Lions were led offensively by Whiteside’s 210 yards rushing and Graf’s 122 yards on the ground.

Jorge Cardenas (10 tackles) and Williams (8 tackles and two interceptions) led the Vernon defense.
