Texas Prep Xtra reported as 35-14, but still I thought this was going to be one for the ages!

The Austin American Statesman also has it as 35-14. I was shocked by the score. I didn't think Giddings would win, and I sure didn't figure they'd beat Wimberley by 3 TDs.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Giddings 35, Wimberley 14

GIDDINGS — Angele Fitzhenry's prize for having the winning blue ticket at Friday's Wimberley-Giddings football game was the game ball.

It was the same ball her son, Brock, used to run for a game-high 251 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-14 victory over Wimberley before 4,000 spectators at Buffalo Stadium.

Angele also happens to be the wife of Giddings coach Derek Fitzhenry, whose team aspires to win a state championship this year. It was a good night to be a Fitzhenry.

Giddings built a 21-0 lead on the strength of a powerful ground attack, survived a second-half rally and won the battle of two of the state's Top 10 Class 3A teams. The catalyst was Brock Fitzhenry, whose 56-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter gave Giddings its 21-0 cushion.

Fitzhenry, a junior, was the leading running back in Central Texas in 2005, gaining more than 2,400 yards. He laughed when he learned after the game his mother won the game ball.

"If anyone deserves a game ball, it's my offensive line," the quarterback said. Notable blockers included Jeremy Dunk and Alex Gonzalez.

Although he was the game's obvious star, Fitzhenry rated his effort a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. "I fumbled too much (twice) and got a little shaky there," he said. "It got better in the second half."

All told, Giddings finished with 464 yards of offense, all on the ground. The Buffaloes only attempted one pass.

Giddings was strong defensively, too, led by Spencer Duncan, Michael Robinson and Trey Wolridge, who consistently put heat on Wimberley quarterback Ricky Beaty.

Beaty, who finished with 226 yards in the air, gave the Texans a glimpse of home in the third quarter. In a 25-second span midway through the period, he connected with Len Thompson for a 56-yard touchdown and, after Wimberley recovered a fumble, tossed a 28-yard scoring pass to Caril Roberts, cutting Giddings' lead to 21-14. The Texans weren't able to get any closer.

"That's what I'm most proud of," Derek Fitzhenry said. "We had some adversity but we stuck with it, the offensive line got going, and ol' 'mo' was back on our side."

Brock Fitzhenry got plenty of support from his backfield, too. Devane Jarmon rumbled for 147 yards, 80 in the second half. Brandon Johnson rushed for 51 yards on six carries, scoring the game's first touchdown.

Giddings scored the first two times it had the ball, on drives of 53 and 57 yards. The Buffaloes led 14-0 at halftime.

Fitzhenry struck early in the third quarter, bouncing off a would-be tackler and racing 56 yards for a touchdown.

Derek Fitzhenry also laughed about his wife winning the game ball. When the public address announcer called out the winning number, a lone scream came from the bleachers.

"That's just like her," the coach said. "She was a college cheerleader."

Just wondering, did Giddings throw any? By the look of their rushing total, they probably didn't need too.

One attempt, incomplete. Rushing game was on last night.
